Meet marge,I like to call her Masrge. The new geese in the park near the shops I go to are so nice to look at and just watch them do their thing and make noise.

But what is the story of the geese?

Geese were a very rare breeding of big birds forty years ago, which was once even released to prevent the species from disappearing from the Netherlands.
As m also in some parts of the cities in the netherlands.
The Oostvaardersplassen in Flevoland formed the base for this remarkable recovery. Like many other geese, Greylag Geese are very social birds and mate for life.

Firm brown-grey goose, the largest of all brown-grey goose species. Neck and head slightly lighter than the body. The underwings are also a good feature. These are two-tone: dark with a light gray front. I was told by a fisherman in the nearby pont that these were still young ones under a year.

The color of the legs and bill is important for geese: the bill and legs are orange-pink in the greylag goose. The bill is sturdy and is sometimes compared to a winter carrot. But than with a lot of noise.

I looked up when they breed and what they eat.

They eat a lot, all vegetarian, a complete menu of grass, plants, roots, seeds, fruits and young shoots (including reeds). In winter also on fields supplemented with harvest residues of maize, potatoes and grains. But thats not possible here so they will be fed in winter on special feeder places.

They breed approximately from April to May/June. One clutch per year with four to six eggs (exceptionally also possible up to 8 eggs). Likes to breed in a loose colony near conspecifics. Predators are then spotted more quickly and chased away. Here they are protected and when they have kiddos they are in a special fenced area.
