Finding Fulfillment During Retirement

I officially retired in May 2021 and one of the things that I planned to do during my retirement was to travel more. I had always enjoyed traveling and was looking forward to more traveling. With the Covid 19 pandemic, all my traveling plans had to be postponed.

While I was still working, I would complain that I had to spend much time at work and there was not enough time for my family and to do things that I want to do. Now that I am no longer working, I seem to have a bit too much free time on my hand.

Retirement is a new phase of life and people may have some problems adjusting to this phase. They are no longer active in the workplace, they are busy enjoying their newfound free time, yet at the same time, they are trying to adjust to retirement. They are looking for something to do to make their lives vibrant again. For others, retirement means you have enough savings for your entire life already. Today, more and more people are spending time seeking ways on how they can kindle the fire within them again once they retire.

Here are some tips on finding fulfillment during retirement.

1 Keep learning new things throughout your retirement

Retirement is not a one-time event. It is a long, continuous process. If you don't keep learning new things and if you don't allow your mind to be stretched, then retirement can become boring and that can lead to depression.

This is a good time to take up a musical instrument or learn to paint or write computer programs or study history or master the universe. Of course, you don't have to master the universe; for most people, that would take too long anyway. But it's a good idea to target something that won't get totally boring after a year or two and will let you know whether you're getting any closer to mastering it.

To have fun, the thing you learn should be hard enough that it takes a while, but not so hard that it's discouraging. It should be something concrete and with an objective, rather than an abstract subject like metaphysics or theology. And it should be in some way social---either other people are doing it too, so you have someone to talk about it with, or else there are experts in the field who can guide you.

2 Socialize, network and otherwise connect with people.

Socializing with other people is the key to a happy and meaningful retirement. So, reach out and get involved with your community. Whether it's helping out at a local charity or taking up a new hobby, you'll meet new people and create new opportunities for yourself – both professionally and personally – during your retirement years.

A study on retirement showed that retirees who had the most active social lives were more likely to say they were happy with their lives now than those with less active social lives. These results held regardless of marital status, health problems, or whether they had children living nearby. The finding was not entirely surprising since previous research shows social interaction is important for well-being.

3 Get your finances in order

Most people don't realize how much money they need to live comfortably in retirement. A rough estimate of your expenditure will give you a rough idea about the finances you will need in later life.

Therefore it is very important to plan and save money much earlier in order to be able to retire comfortably. This is something which a lot of young people tend to ignore.

Depending on the financial situation, you may also want to consider employment options as well during this time. Always give yourself enough time to plan things out so that if your retirement does not go according to plan, then you are able to change things around so that they will work out better for you.

4 Find a new purpose during retirement

When we stop working, we need to establish a new purpose in life. It is important to realize that when we are not working, it is no longer about earning an income. Instead, the purpose of retirement is to find fulfillment in life. We may find that this purpose is very different from what we experienced while working.

Retirement should not be just about having more fun every day. To find our new purpose, we should ask ourselves this question.

Given the skills and knowledge that I had and with my life experiences, how can I still contribute to society?

For me personally, since I am a father of an autistic son and also a founding member of the Kuching Autistic Association, I hope to be able to do more to help people with autism in Kuching.

5 Do more of what you love

Now that we are retired, we have more free time on our hands. As such we can make use of this free time to do more of the things that we love to do. This can include spending more time with family and friends, going for walks in nature, listening to our favorite music and reading. We can still be active and busy, but doing things that bring joy to us.

Conclusion

Although people say that they can't wait to retire, most often they discover that they miss the excitement of their work. When you stop working you will find that your sources of fulfillment change.

By following the above tips, we can still find fulfillment during our retirement.
