Introduction

There was great response to my previous post Daring To Dream At Age 60. Therefore I decided to write part 2 to this post. Age should not be a barrier for those pursuing their dreams. Nobody is too young or too old to chase after their dreams.

However, I feel that those who are older have the added advantage of experience and wisdom. I like to share 7 truths that I wish I knew earlier when it comes to chasing your dreams.

1 It Is All Up To You

It is your dreams after all and so it is up to you to put in the hard work and make the necessary sacrifices to achieve your dreams. Nobody is entitled to their dreams. There is no magic elevator that takes you straight to your dreams, everyone has to climb up the staircase one step at a time. Although your parents and your best friend may support you, ultimately it is up to you to believe in yourself and your dreams and to do what it takes daily to reach your dreams.

Social media is full of stories of people who are living the life of their dreams. Their luxurious lifestyle, millions of dollars income that they are earning, their lavish holidays, etc are splashed all over the internet. However, it is up to you to define your own success and how things look like when you have reached your dreams. It is not necessary to define your dreams in terms of money and possessions.

2 The Power Of Dreams

Dreams are very powerful because the process that you go through in chasing your dreams makes you strive to improve your existing conditions and to be the best version of yourself. Your dedication, perseverance and discipline will build up your character. Who you become as a result of your dreams can be an inspiration for others who are chasing similar dreams. For example, when my wife Roselind and I dream of building an educational center for my autistic son Jonathan, there were many hardships and struggles that we had to overcome. Hopefully, our story will inspire others to do the same.

3 Do Not Let Failures Stop You

Failures, setbacks, and obstacles are unavoidable in the pursuit of your dreams. While failing is a possibility, giving up is not. Remember that failure is only permanent when you give up. However, if you accept your failures, learn from them, and you will be able to move forward one step closer to your dreams. Therefore, each time you fall, get right up and emerge stronger. Failure is an opportunity to learn, while trials and hardships will strengthen you.

4 The Power Of Why

Why you want to pursue your dreams is just as important as what dreams you want to pursue. This is because the power of purpose will propel you forward in the face of adversity. This purpose will give you the strength and bravery to continue pursuing your ambition when you are at your lowest point and all hope seems lost.

5 Focus On The Future And Visualize Your Dreams

It's all too easy to become discouraged when you realise how far you still have to go. This is why it's critical to keep your eyes forward and visualize your goals every day. Your dreams are unlikely to come true overnight. Your sub-conscious knows what to move toward if you focus forward and can picture your dream in your mind before it happens. Imagine amazing prospects appearing in front of you as you focus forward. Consider how fantastic it feels to be living your ideal life. Allow yourself to enjoy this sensation and the desire for what you want. You will be more receptive to receive goodness that comes your way

6 Talents Are Overrated

People who succeed are not necessarily the most skilled, but rather those who put in the greatest effort to hone their skills and persevere in the face of adversity in order to pursue their goals. You and I can't rely just on our talents. Whatever talents we have, we must continue to practice, practice, and practice in order to improve.

7 Break Your Plans Down Into Smaller Pieces

In the beginning, big dreams might be quite overwhelming. So much work need to be done that it becomes daunting! Aviod being derailed before you even start by breaking it down into small chunks. What are the milestones that you need to achieve? For each milestone, list down the tasks that need to be done. Then on a daily basis, tick off these tasks that you have accomplished. Pursuing your dream is like going on a long journey. You may not yet know the complete route, but as long as you know the next step, you are moving one step closer to your dreams.

So what other truths you like to share with us. Do share your experience in the comments section.
