Been Busy House Hunting

A big hello to the Hive and Silver Bloggers community. For those of you who already owned a house, you know that buying a house is a major undertaking, with so many variables and factors to consider. You can't take this lightly and many people in their lifetime may stay in one or two houses only. Once a house has been bought, it is a decision that is not easy to undo.

My family has been staying in the same house in my hometown of Kuching for almost 20 years. Now that my daughter has been working for a few years, we thought it was time to buy her house. The main reason behind this decision is that the prices of houses have been rising steadily over the years. Housing has become less and less affordable, especially for the low-income group or for those who have worked for only a few years. We decided that it is the right time to buy a house before the prices increase even further. As parents, and since my daughter is only in her mid-twenties, we tried to provide input so that she can make a wise decision.

We managed to shortlist a number of criteria to guide us to find the ideal house. My daughter wants to stay near to our present house, so the ideal house has to be located within a 15-minute drive. There was a terraced house located just behind our house that was for sale. Unfortunately, we saw the for sale sign rather late and someone else has already paid the deposit for the house. We have also yet to decide on the type of house whether it should be a terraced house or an apartment. Landed property is more expensive but now with Covid 19 and maybe other future infectious diseases, the idea of staying at a high-rise building seems less appealing. There have been many cases of covid-19 clusters in densely populated buildings. A compromise could be a townhouse where the prices are lower than landed properties but not as densely populated as condominiums. We have a fairly good idea of the budget for the house and my daughter has more or less decided that the loan repayment period should not be more than 20 years.

As this is an important project, we came up with our action plan. Step 1 is to scour the internet to look for property listings. Putting the search engine to work and through a process of elimination, we came out with a preliminary list of potential properties. For the past 3 weekends, we have been going around to look at these properties.

For us Chinese, one very important consideration is the "feng shui" of the properties. For this process, we are guided by a feng shui checklist. For the uninitiated, the term feng shui (literally translated as wind and water) refers to the universal energy that exists within and around us. The practice of feng shui also known as Chinese geomancy aims to tap the good energy so that the house is in harmony with the environment. One of the most crucial factors is the direction that the main door and whether anything is blocking the main door. The main door is considered as "the mouth" of the house, the energy (either good or bad) flows through here.

For the time being, we are still comparing the pros and cons of the properties that we have visited. We intend to look at some more properties. As I said, this is a tedious process and I will keep all of you updated.
