The Sound of Darkness

It's Friday night and the weekend's just starting with a buzz in the air at all the hangouts.

Here in South Africa, everyone keeps on checking the time on their cell phones and looking at the award-winning EskomSePush App.
Crazy, as the weekend's here and it's time to let the hair down!

Home cooks are rushing around finishing off meal preps and flasks are filled with boiling water as if we're all going on a picnic and afraid we'll miss the bus!

Business picks up at takeaways with an influx of meal orders, and Mr. Delivery is seen driving all over the suburbs.
Rechargeable lamps stay permanently on charge, those of us who forget, quickly put power banks and cell phones on charge.

What's up with the people?

Loadshedding is about to kick off, and EskomSePush keeps us up to date with the planned outage schedule.
My fellow #hivesouthafrica bloggers will know exactly what this cheeky name means...

On rare occasions when it's been a hectic week, I actually find myself looking forward to it, and feel quite disappointed when the power comes back, dead on time. This is one function our government carries out with precision as the power WILL go off and come back on at the scheduled hour!

If only they could be as dependable in other spheres of governing!

I hear my fellow South Africans saying 'this woman must be crazy, who enjoys loadshedding?'

Have you ever listened to the sound of silence that descends when the power goes out? It's as if the world goes to sleep.

Believe it or not, it can be pure bliss not hearing the low humming of appliances and electronic devices, and taking a break, unless of course there's much to be done.

When I have stuff to do, like writing a Hive blog at the end of the day, it is HIGHLY irritating, as even my mobile data dies!

It naturally is really bad for our economy as manufacturing and other activities come to a halt.
Our city of gold, Johannesburg, which is the economic and manufacturing hub of SA, has outages lasting 4-5 hours, so we are actually lucky here in Durban with only 2 hours of no power!

We have rechargeable lamps and light bulbs, but also have candles - 4 candlepower...5 candlepower...and so forth, a perfect opportunity to get the feel of a long-forgotten era when electricity did not exist.

That's what we did this weekend when it was our suburb's 2-hour no-power slot; just sitting quietly with no distraction, chatting and enjoying our Friday night takeaway - a delicious, not-so-healthy, crispy-crunchy seafood platter of battered fish, prawns, calamari, and mussels served with chips.

In busy hangouts and homes with backup generators, solar panels, and inverters, there's a sudden hush as the world turns black and comes to a halt, before backup power kicks in, and then it's back to action!

Why are we so driven that it costs an electricity outage to slow us down?

If you're always racing to the next moment, what happens to the one you're in?
