Hiking, Wild Camping & Alpenglow

Last Thursday, it was raining till the late afternoon, but at about 3 pm I decided to not wait any longer and to drive by car to my parents house for my first hike in 2021, instead of riding my motorbike. Because after packing my backpack the third time I had enough of waiting.

Because this was my first overnight hike too, I had packed much too many things, of course - food for 3 days and even though I usually photograph with a tripod I didn't use it at all. All in all my backpack weighed about 20 kilograms - next time I will think more and carry less 😁

Right behind my parents house there's a steep forest and a brook flows down in a small gorge.

There's no path, so I had to hike straight up the forest and after about 1.5 kilometers I reached my first place to rest, looking down into the gorge to a nice waterfall on the other side. I was already almost too exhausted to hike any further up the mountain, but since I had reached a forest road, I knew that hiking would be much easier from now on.

Because I started my hike at about 5 pm, you might think that it was quite late to reach any mountain peak. And right you are, but not only because it was getting dark I had to search for a spot to put up my tent, but because further up the mountain there was still quite a lot of snow, hiking to the peak would have been too hard, especially in darkness.
So, not very far below the peak, which is 1,699 meters high, I turned around and went back down in search for a campground. My gear is 3 season stuff only, so camping in the snow would have been too cold I believe.

A few hundred meters deeper, at the end of a more or less snowy forest road I found a little place which was big enough for my tent and since I was too tired this place was good enough for me.

My campground might not seem to be the best looking one, but just like me, you haven't seen yet the views I had the next morning.

Falling asleep was not easy since this was my first time wild camping and some of the noises I heard sounded quite weird. But because I have been quite exhausted from carrying about 20 kilograms up a mountain, I woke up at 3:30 am for the first time and then got up at about 5 am.

The mountains in the north have still been in the shadows.

Looking towards north-west I could see a little glow on some mountain peaks in the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern and knew it looks very promising. I didn't get disappointed as you can see the Alpenglow in the following photos.

I have been sleeping on a quite steep slope more or less behind trees, but when the light came back in the morning I realized that my chosen campground was not bad at all.

After having a coffee and chocolate muesli I packed my things into the packpack and took the same path back down and made my last break at the waterfall where I had my first break the day before.

During my break I took also the only tree photo from the hike - if I'm not completely wrong this is a beech tree.

This last photo is a close-up photo of the rock formation on the other side of the little gorge where the brook flows down the mountain. Quite a while ago I have posted a larger image of this curved rock formation.

I am sure you want to know why I have posted this hiking story to the Hive Silver Bloggers Community. It's just because I felt so very old and could hardly walk for a while after getting back home again - that was my first hike in months and my fitness level was below zero.
But after having a lazy day yesterday I feel much better today and am already planning my next hike, maybe with my tent again.

That's all for today's article. I hope I was able to entertain you a bit with my little first hike in 2021.
