Silver Bloggers' Community Smorgasbord - 16 September 2021

smorgasbord 16 Sept 2021.jpg

Hello, everyone!

We're back with another bunch of Sassy Silver Bloggers' posts. If you missed the last one, you'll find it here.

Between @lizelle and I, we're trying to do one of these between the various #bow editions. If you haven't got there yet, and are of a mind to participate this week, there's still time.

First, some housekeeping

To begin with, and as always, a big -

Each and every little contribution helps to build the account and increase our voting power, and which is to the benefit of members of the community. At the moment, we manually curate, but as the numbers grow (yay!), that's becoming a challenge. So, if you

  • would like to delegate to the Silver Bloggers Community, the handy table at the end of this post is a good place to start; and
  • are interested in helping with this and any other community duties, get in touch with either Lizelle (lizelle#5440) or me (fionasfavourites#1035) via Discord.

How posts are selected

The posts we select to showcase must not just have been posted in the community, but the account must be subscribe to it. Also, the topic must fit in with our general themes as set out on our community page -

  • a keenness to learn more about blockchain and crypto
  • life experiences
  • musings and memories of lives lived
  • planning for (and doing) life beyond formal work

Excluded

Posts that are a response to a community or challenge like #bow are not considered.

This time round, the selection includes the world's preoccupation with a 20th anniversary and other little and big life matters.

Memories and points of view

The world, has this month, reflected on the events that unfolded in New York City on September 11, 2011. It's a year that stands in my memory for very personal reasons: the Husband and I moved into our first "together" home, I made a fleeting visit to Japan, he retired and we got engaged; just for starters. All those events were overshadowed by that day, and which, it seems, the entire world remembers. Two posts about those events that hit the blockchain were posted in our community - by our resident posts. On the face of it, two more diametrically opposed views you could not have. However, delve into them and we - and they - are all joined in humanity.

Go and read them for yourselves: one from @yahia-lababidi, here and the other, from @ericvancewalton, here.

A more personal memory

That day holds much more personal memories for our Silver Blonde Lizzie.

It was her father's final birthday. Such bittersweet memories especially as this is also the year Mom Lily celebrated the start her 90th decade.

Matters seemingly mundane and as important

Personally, cleaning and moving house are a challenge. Silver Wings has had the dubious joy of work going on in his building that frightened a rhodent into his apartment.

There is no greater incentive to clean than an unwanted rhodent. Read about how his feline was of little to no help here.

Our resident musician (and scientist and crypto expert), with his family are facing a clean-up of a different sort because they're heading home. From the Netherlands. To Australia. Here he ruminates on the start of the journey - what's involved in finding a moving company.

Autumnal photo essay and reflections on the value of this community

Last but not least, @antikus, at the end of a beautiful autumnal walk through his city reflects on not just a retiree's "work", but the value to a retiree of the social blockchain and especially the Silver Bloggers Community.

Pop over, say hi and get to know some new members of our community! Remember, if a post has expired by the time you get there, and you can't vote, you can always add a tip!

Eternal Blockhain Challenge

If you don't know about this challenge, read about it here. It's an initiative from @edprivat encouraging us to look back and critique our early (or more than year old) post(s) on the blockchain.

Why is she talking about this?

I'm glad you asked. I know that among our "seasoned" Silvers, we have some who are young 'uns on the blockchain.

A couple of our Silver Bloggers (@kaerpediem, @silversaver888) , have participated (but posted in other communities or not used the #eternalblockchain). 😞

These posts that we all started and made mistakes, not really understanding how things work. The blockchain and the blogosphere were new worlds to us, too, and we didn't feel so brave, then. Here's how it started for our dear Lizzie and you can read my burbling here.

Finally, a reminder about this week's Blog of the Week

Again, the details are here, but just in case you've forgotten

the deadline has been extended to Monday 20 September 2021
