You may have heard that there is a brand new ‘Hive World Championship’ and this year 2024 it's all about which Hivian in the world can grow the best pumpkin. You can find more details about at the end of this post.
Well, I was immediately enthusiastic about the idea, because it's one of the best thing here to get to know each other better across continents. However, I had initially decided not to take part. The plan was to be a silent observer of all the lovely worldwide pumpkin postings. Well, sometimes or rather often in life things turn out differently than planned ;-)
Vielleicht habt ihr schon davon gehört, es gibt ganz neue die „Hive World Championship“ und dieses Jahr 2024 geht es darum, welchem Hivian weltweit der beste Kürbis Anbau gelingt. Mehr Details dazu findet ihr am Ende dieses Posts.
Nun, ich war jedenfalls sofort begeistert von der Idee, denn es ist eine gute Gelegenheit einander über die Kontinente hinweg besser kennenzulernen. Allerdings hatte ich zuerst beschlossen, daran nicht teilzunehmen. Der Plan war als stiller Beobachter all die schönen weltweiten Kürbis Postings zu verfolgen. Nun, manchmal oder gar nicht so selten im Leben kommt es dann anders als geplant ;-)
But first a little look back at my ‘pumpkin season 2023'
Zuerst aber ein kleiner Rückblick in meine „Kürbis Saison 2023"
We had eaten a butternut squash back then, very tasty by the way, and afterwards I spontaneously came up with the idea of putting the fresh seeds in a pot of soil. What I hadn't expected was that they all sprouted and there I was with 30 pumpkin plants!
I was able to give many of them away, the rest were simply planted at random in a field in the garden, which we had planned to clear up at the time.
Wir hatten damals einen Butternuss Kürbis verspeist, sehr lecker übrigens, und danach kam ich spontan auf die Idee, die frischen Samen in einen Topf mit Erde zu geben. Womit ich nicht gerechnet hatte, sie gingen alle auf und da saß ich nun mit 30 Kürbis Pflanzen!
Ich konnte viele verschenken, der Rest kam einfach auf gut Glück in ein Feld im Garten, das wir eigentlich schon damals auflösen wollten..
The little plants thrived magnificently and, thanks to snails, not all of them grew into large plants, the harvest in autumn was very plentiful and they all tasted fantastic. All of them? No, not all of them... One was left in the cellar because it had been promised to my sister for cooking....
Die Pflänzchen gediehen prächtig und Schnecken sei Dank wuchsen auch nicht alle zu großen Pflanzen heran, die Ernte im Herbst war sehr zahlreich und sie schmeckten alle fantastisch. Alle? Nein nicht alle... einer blieb nämlich übrig im Keller, weil er meiner Schwester zum Kochen versprochen gewesen war....

Back to the year 2024 / Zurück ins Jahr 2024
We've given up this vegetable patch, this area is already overgrown with meadow and our old apple tree is finally dead, but I was able to convince the family that it would be fun to give it a chance this year and let a nice flowering climbing plant grow on it. I still had seeds for them and they have now grown so much that they will soon be allowed ‘on the tree’.
Das Gemüse Feld haben wir aufgelassen, diese Fläche ist auch schon mit Wiese bewachsen und unser alter Apfelbaum hat endgültig das zeitliche gesegnet, doch ich konnte die Familie überzeugen, dass es lustig wäre ihm dieses Jahr noch zu schenken und eine nette blühende Kletterpflanzen darauf ranken zu lassen. Samen dafür hatte ich noch und sie sind nun schon soweit angewachsen, dass sie bald „an den Baum“ dürfen.
And that's where the Hive World Championship 24 comes in... Daniel and Kvinna had already been pestering me to take part, I couldn't get it out of my head. Then I remembered the last pumpkin in the cellar! When I asked my sister when she would finally cook it, she replied ‘soon’. Hmm. Now you have to know that pumpkins keep for a very long time when stored in a cool place, but sometime in June next year? So I went to have a look. And too bad, too bad, it was already very soft with mouldy spots.
Ja und da kommt jetzt die Hive World Championship 24 ins Spiel... Daniel und Kvinna hatten mich schon gelöchert, ich solle doch mitmachen, das ging mir nicht mehr aus dem Kopf. Dann fiel mir der letzte Kürbis im Keller ein! Auf Nachfrage an meine Schwester, wann sie ihn denn nun endlich verkochen würde kam ein „demnächst“. Hm. Nun muss man wissen, dass Kürbisse kühl gelagert zwar sehr lange halten, aber irgendwann im Juni des nächsten Jahres? Also ging ich nachgucken. Und schade schade, er war schon ganz weich mit schimmligen Flecken.
It was still enough for a nice photo and there were actually a few seeds in the lower part of the fruiting body that looked relatively fit. After washing the seeds and preparing a small pot of soil, I sat in the garden and thought... Should I actually start the experiment? Actually, we wanted to minimise the work in the garden for various reasons.
Für ein schönes Foto hat es noch gereicht und tatsächlich fanden sich im unteren Teil des Fruchtkörpers noch ein paar Samen, die relativ fit aussahen. Samen gewaschen, Tröpfechen mit Erde vorbereitet, saß ich also im Garten und überlegte... Soll ich das Experiment tatsächlich starten? Eigentlich wollten wir die Arbeit im Garten ja aus diversen Gründen minimieren.
But after a refreshment of fresh cherries from the tree, the decision was made: Yes, I'll do it, it could be a fun experiment.
Nach einer Stärkung mit frischen Kirschen vom Baum ist aber die Entscheidung gefallen: Ja, ich mach das, könnte ein lustiges Experiment werden.
So, dear Daniel, I'm accepting the challenge and taking part in the Hive World Championship 2024. What will come ouf is written in the stars. According to Google, it is possible to grow smaller pumpkin varieties on trellises.
However, it is questionable whether these seeds from the old pumpkin will still germinate. Well, I'll know in a week or so, otherwise I'll have to see where I can get other plants.
Somit, lieber Daniel, nehme ich die Herausforderung an und beteilige mich am Hive World Championship 2024. Was daraus wird steht in den Sternen. Laut Google ist es jedenfalls möglich, kleinere Kürbis Sorten auf Rankhilfen wachsen zu lassen. <<<< Hinweis für @kvinna und @solymi also auch für Balkone?! ;-)
Fraglich ist jedoch, ob diese Samen aus dem Gammel Kürbis noch keimen werden. Nun, das werde ich in etwa einer Woche wissen, sonst muss ich sehen, wo ich andere Pflanzen herbekomme.

So get out the seeds and plants, get in the soil or mention other Hivians who like to garden in the comments.
And, of course, it would be great if non-participants could also check in from time to time on the reports of others under the tag #hwc2024 and thus give the world championship more meaning!
Gewinner oder nicht, ich denke es ist eine feine Sache um andere Gärtner oder Kreative weltweit kennezulernen und schon jetzt waren doch ein paar interessante Posts unter dem tag zu finden.
Also raus die Samen und Pfläzchen, rein in die Erde oder auch gerne andere Hivians, die gerne gärtnern in den Kommentaren erwähnen.
Und es wäre natürlich schön, wenn auch die nicht Teilnehmenden von Zeit zu Zeit auf die Berichte der anderen unter dem tag #hwc2024 vorbeischauen und der Weltmeisterschaft somit mehr Bedeutung geben!
