Facebook's plans to launch an Instagram for boys and girls under the age of 13 don't appeal to many people.
The last to raise their voices have been 44 General Attorneys in the United States, who have just written and signed a letter addressed to the CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg. In that letter, they urge the manager to put aside his plans to create an Instagram for younger users.
"The use of social media can be detrimental to the health and well-being of children, who are not prepared to face the challenges of having a social media account," the letter says. And furthermore, the attorneys general consider that "Facebook has not historically protected the welfare of children on its platforms."
The attorneys general have "an interest in protecting our youngest citizens, and Facebook's plans to create a platform where children under the age of 13 are encouraged to share content online run counter to that interest," they say.
Instagram does not formally allow users under the age of 13 to enter the platform. But there is no strict age verification and that leads to it being infested with young people despite this ban.
