Larry Is Alive #248 January 22, 2024: I Am Alive Challenge

Hello everyone and warm welcome to my Larry hunt for monday the 22nd day of January, 2024. Ivory Coast, the AFCON host nation, will have to rely on other results to avoid a shock Africa Cup of Nations group-stage exit after Equatorial Guinea trounced them (4-0) in Abidjan this evening. Equatorial Guinea will now face a third-placed side from Group C, D, or E in the last 16 on Sunday.

That result ensured that Equatorial Guinea finished as group leaders ahead of Nigeria who also sealed their qualification by defeating Guinea-Bissau (1-0) this evening. The Super Eagles will on their own part face the second-placed side from Group C, which will be Senegal, Guinea or Cameroon, in the last 16 on Saturday (20:00 GMT).

Currently, the Black Stars of Ghana who faces an uphill task to qualify, is playing Mozambique in a must win match for them. The match is at halftime now with Ghana leading by a lone goal.

In the second of the group, Cape Verde, who had already qualifed is playing against the Pharaohs of Egypt. And they are also leading Egypt by (1-0) wt halftime.

Larry then veers off to have a look at today in #history.

Larry begins his look at today in history from the USA. He finds out that on this day in 1973, the United States Supreme Court issued one of its most historic rulings, Roe v. Wade, holding that a Texas legislation criminalising abortion in most cases violated a woman's constitutional right to privacy.

From the USA, Larry goes to Bolivia. He finds out that on this day in 2010, Evo Morales, an Aymara indigenous member, was sworn in as Bolivia's President, making him the first Indian to hold the position.

From Bolivia, Larry goes to the world of astronauts and cosmonauts. He finds out that on this day in 1992, Roberta Bondar, who worked as a payload specialist on the Discovery space shuttle, became the first Canadian woman and neurologist to travel into space.

From the world of astronauts and cosmonauts, Larry goes to the events of WW II. He finds out that on this day in 1943, all Japanese resistance in Papua, on the island of New Guinea, which served as an important Allied base at Port Moresby during World War II, ended.

From the events of WW II, Larry goes to Russia. He finds out that on this day in 1905, on what became known as Bloody Sunday, Russian military opened fire on Russian workers marching through St. Petersburg.

Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in #history from England. He finds out that during this month in 1561, Francis Bacon, a British statesman and philosopher, was born in York House, London.

Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his daily deliveries.
