Drill Ye Tarrier's Drill - HIVE Open Mic 42 - Soar

Hi open mic fam

This week I've went with one of my favorite old Irish folk songs... Drill Ye Tarrier's Drill.

It's a work song from 1888 and would likely have been sung by the Irish labourers while they worked to build the railroads in the late 19th Century.

Tarriers were the guys who drilled the holes for the dynamite to go in to blast the railroad tunnels.

I picked this song this week for a sort of comedic reason...the line that goes "Last week a premature blast went of and a mile in the sky went big John Goff!"

Big John's been blown in to the sky by a stick of dynamite.....sent soaring... and when payday comes around the following week he finds he's been docked for the time he was up in the sky... "Next pay day rolls around John Goff a dollar short was found, when asked the reason came this reply ....You were docked for the time you were up in the sky!"

The thought of entering this song for the Soar week made me laugh....I hope it makes you laugh to :)

It's also Robert Burns day here in Scotland and while filming this I was soaring from the few whiskeys I had for lunch with my Haggis roll so there's that into the bargain :)

Enjoy!

"Drill, Ye Tarriers, Drill"

Every morning at seven o'clock
There's twenty tarriers a workin at the rock
The boss comes along and he says, "Keep still
And come down heavy on the cast iron drill."

So drill, ye tarriers, drill
And drill, ye tarriers, drill
Oh it's work all day for the sugar in your tay
Down beyond the railway
So drill, ye tarriers, drill.
And blast,and fire...

The boss was a fine man down to the ground
And he married a lady six foot round
She baked good bread and she baked it well
But she baked it harder than the hobs of hell

So drill, ye tarriers, drill
And drill, ye tarriers, drill
Oh it's work all day for the sugar in your tay
Down beyond the railway
So drill, ye tarriers, drill
And blast , and fire...

Our new foreman big Jim McCann
By christ, He was a big mean man
Last week a premature blast went off
And a mile in the air went big John Goff.

So drill, ye tarriers, drill
And drill, ye tarriers, drill
Oh it's work all day for the sugar in your tay
Down beyond the railway
So drill, ye tarriers, drill
And blast , and fire...

Next payday comes around
John Goff a dollar short was found
When asked the reason came this reply
"You were docked for the time you were up in the sky!"

So drill, ye tarriers, drill
And drill, ye tarriers, drill
Oh it's work all day for the sugar in your tay
Down beyond the railway
So drill, ye tarriers, drill
And blast , and fire...

A tarriers life is work and sweat
There aint been a tarrier got rich yet
Its work and sweat then drill some more
We'll drill right down to the devil's door!

So drill, ye tarriers, drill
And drill, ye tarriers, drill
Oh it's work all day for the sugar in your tay
Down beyond the railway
So drill, ye tarriers, drill
And blast , and fire...

Every morning at seven o'clock
There's twenty tarriers a drillin at the rock
The boss comes along and he says, "Keep still
And come down heavy on the cast iron drill."

So drill, ye tarriers, drill
And drill, ye tarriers, drill
Oh it's work all day for the sugar in your tay
Down beyond the railway
So drill, ye tarriers, drill.
And blast , and fire...

And drill ye tarriers ,drill...
