Hive Open Mic - Highlights

Week 32: November 15-21, 2020

HiveOpenMic32B.png

"Starlight" is the theme of our Hive Open Mic community's most recent weekly live music event. Today's collection of songs includes festive holiday carols and other songs with the stars as our muse.

Here at Hive Open Mic, our community supports the idea of universal harmony, just as the stars shine—we shine—peacefully, infinitely, alongside each other. We see signs of this harmony happening here each and every week, when we celebrate the music of many languages, from many nations. Let's have a listen.

This week's Spotlight Artist is @mipiano, who gives us an amazing solo piano rendition of the song "Starlight" by Muse. This musical expression is stellar in the performance as well as the incredible preparation that must've happened behind the scenes, wow. This work is both beautiful. Powerful. Masterful.

English: @ylich sings like a star, as always, and here he also offers something very special with his strumming pattern. This is the rhythmic sound of a mortar and pestle in action, crushing corn, building the texture for this song's rich storytelling (see his post for a historical context). To me, this feels like a powerful medicine song.

English: I want to honor this musician for his incredible talents as a singer-songwriter. Week after week, he arrives with an original creation in alignment with our weekly theme. This is above and beyond the call, and he exceeds my expectations even further by bringing a wonderful performance to share his creation with us. I feel touched by his dedication, and impressed by his talents. And this example here is precious. This one honors his mom, and as I listen I find myself imagining my mom too, and honoring her. I'm thankful for this.

Noche de Paz / Silent Night (Cover) by @jesuslnrs

English: Here's a karaoke-style performance of the familiar Christmas carol. As @jesuslnrs points out, the Spanish lyrics emphasize the brilliance of the peace star above the other stars. Beautiful! I like the way this artist stays strong on the melody and then improvises toward the end with some strategically placed harmonic points of emphasis.

English: Wonderful singing and playing, sharing a precious song written by this artist's brother, Carlos Linares. This song is strikingly beautiful, and something magical and mysterious happens at the 1:39 mark. Sounds like a mystical birdsong or something, right in alignment with your singing in the word: "Nightmare". Wild!

¡Salvaje!

My entry is a song about embracing star qualities by stepping into a truer, fuller expression of who I am. At its core is the inspiration to be bold, be courageous, and bring colors, love, and lightness into the world.

Appreciation

Hive Open Mic showcases Hive's gifted and talented musicians. I honor these artists for expressing themselves in a way that creates connection. To me, we all benefit through the camaraderie between musicians and music fans, sharing a musical vibration. Please join me in extending our gratitude through claps, finger snaps, and tips to individual musicians.

Inspiration

Here's a pretty cool song I hadn't heard before, from a band that's new to me. It's a song called "Stars," by Iya Terra. I dig the overall sound and vibe. This is presented by Sugarshack, which is an indie record label with some awesome live music on their YouTube channel. I recommend checking it out.

For the sake of conversation, let's look at the F-bomb they drop at the 1:34 mark. In my home life, with little kids around, it does feel like a bomb whenever I drop this word, so I try not to say it at all. I also think this word is completely meaningless in the context of this song. It adds nothing here, just used as an adverb: "Life is fuckin' beautiful." Seems lazy to me. Anyone have any thoughts to add on the subject of F-bombs in songs?

Acknowledgements

I am grateful for the various ways this event stretches me as a music maker and a generous listener. I enjoy the surprises, discovering songs that inspire me. I get the impression we're all making progress, sharing our art with the world, making steady steps toward Global Harmony. And our unique way of honoring artists is centered around live music. How fun!
