Weekly Update

Hive Open Mic Week 63: June 20-26, 2021

Hive-Open-Mic-63d.png

Today's post tells the tale of our 63rd week of Hive Open Mic, with the theme: Storyteller. According to this week's 100+ entries and thousands of listeners, our community greatly appreciates the invitation to connect through storytelling. Let's celebrate some of the highlights with a quick recap.

For our Storyteller theme, some of us share the journey of our experiences as song carriers, with ups and downs. For example, people persevere through illness this week, along with internet shortages and power outages. Musicians also overcome stage fright to be here, stepping into the spotlight. Adventurers explore the unknowns. These are honorable actions.

I'm grateful for the stories that surface, through the music. To me, these stories bridge cultural differences, crossing language barriers, starting conversations, bringing us together to relate with each other. Some of these stories remind us of our history, and others will guide our futures. What does "Storytelling" mean to you?

This theme is chosen by the recent Spotlight Artist: @celticheartbeat. Nearly every week since the beginning of our 63-week event, he offers a song in his distinct playing style: down-to-earth and ultra-chill, like gently rolling waves. He hails from Ireland, where he champions the traditional Irish folk song. It feels just right to begin the highlights with him.

View the Original Post

@celticheartbeat presents "An Evening of Irish Folk Songs." This ambitious set of five songs stretches him into new territory as an artist. Epic! To me, the music feels authentic, even in its old Irish accent, taking us on a trip back in time. I feel these songs are real, raw, and relatable—definitive aspects of compelling storytelling.

Spotlight Artist

The Blacksmith (Cover) by @thecryptidcrone

View the Original Post

@thecryptidcrone teams up with @queenoftheworld @audiohive-me and @holisticmom, offering a song with a very strong storytelling element. To me, this song shows high awareness of the present moment where we are as a community, taking into consideration the weekly theme, and bringing musicians together to co-create.

Although there are four artists who are all worthy of the spotlight, my intention is to shine the spotlight specifically on the singer herself, asking her to stand alone as this week's Spotlight Artist. To me, it's a pleasure to hear her here, and a pleasant surprise seeing and hearing her stand strong right alongside some of this community's mightiest artists.

This song surprises me in the way it seems to draw me in, listening deeply, imagining, visualizing, journeying, resonating. The melody itself calls my heart, I feel, as if I already know it, and the poetry gladdens and saddens me at the same time. All of this is supported so nicely by the accompanying musicians. I feel like I'm right there with them, shaking a maraca.

I am pleased to acknowledge this musician as this week's Spotlight Artist. As a token of appreciation, I'm happy to invite her to choose our community's Hive Open Mic theme for our upcoming week 66. @thecryptidcrone, please choose a theme that will inspire and enliven us as we explore new territory as artists. Just name it in the comments below, and we're good to go!

Beautiful the rhythm of the Milonga with the special timbre of your Ukulele combined with your recited and sung voice, the first time I have heard something like this, I had only heard milongas played with an accordion. I really liked this one! 👏 And the story very well told 🎶

It is an original song about the artist's daughter, who was a very restless child at age 5, jumping everywhere, as if she had trampolines under her feet. Being a dad, I totally relate with the children's excessive energy. Being a music appreciator, I totally enjoy the songwriting and the awesome performance. Kudos to the audio engineer @osomeltrozo for his recording and editing.

Brave Spirit (Original) by @cabelindsay

My entry this week is a song with a prominent story in its lyrics. This is a myth about a woman who lives passionately in an indigenous way, walking in beauty, naturally encountering a man who lives whole-heartedly, walking in brilliance.

Acknowledgements

Whether or not their music is highlighted here, I hold the utmost respect for each of the ~100 Hive musicians who expressed themselves this week through the Hive Open Mic community. I am thankful for the connections that we create through the songs we carry and share. I believe the entire world benefits through the harmony that music gives to us. Please join me in extending our gratitude to the musicians, through claps, finger snaps, comments, and upvotes, as you feel called.

Inspiration

VH1 Storytellers is a terrific TV series, promoting live music. Here's an example of the show's excellence, from its heyday in 1999, featuring Alanis Morissette. I love the way she is encouraged to speak in between songs, sharing stories, expressing her thoughts and feelings about the music she's offering. To me, this sets a good reminder for musicians to give some words to let the audience get to know us.

Appreciation

I am grateful for the various ways this event stretches me as a music maker, generous listener, and patron of the arts. I enjoy the surprises, discovering songs that inspire me. I get the impression we're all making progress, sharing our art with the world, making steady steps toward global harmony. And our unique way of honoring artists is centered around live music. Fun!
