Hive Open Mic ( #openmic ) is a global community celebrating live music on Hive. Each week is a new event, inviting creative expression and genuine connection.
Hive Open Mic - Highlights
Week 44: February 7 - 13, 2021
Some of you know that I've fallen behind schedule in my Hive Open Mic hosting duties, and I'm sorry about that. It's just because I only have small windows of time to work right now. I'm losing my living place due to an ice storm, power outage, and flooding last week in my home town of Austin, Texas, USA. I'm letting go, and moving on. All is well.
Today's live music showcase features our 44th weekly event, with the following theme: “Four”. We continue to see growth in our community, with 40+ terrific entries this week, and ten superb songs are highlighted here. Highlights include songs from five continents, making this a world-wide event, featuring a range of musical styles and tones. We celebrate diversity and variety. Our community stands for global harmony.

Cuatro Almas / Four Souls (Original) by @mariajruizb
English: This week's Spotlight Artist is a newcomer to Hive Open Mic, who introduces an original song in honor of her four family members "taking flight for a better future." Her mother and sisters left their Venezuelan homeland, while she decided to stay. This story touches my heart. It is a beautiful way of keeping the love alive across distances, connecting with family on a heart level—through music. The icing on the cake is this artist's pretty singing and this guitarist's pleasant accompaniment.

Here, he brings together two layers of strings, like waves traveling together on the ocean, dolphins jumping, sunlight glimmering. I am awe-inspired. I also appreciate such a sweet song selection for this week's Hive Open Mic theme: "Four."

Lately, I'm learning that many of my favorite listening experiences are songs about music-making, like this one. This artist gives us a freestyle rap. It's a free-flowing improvisation, written on the fly, recited with excellent articulation. I appreciate the clever word choices, with incredibly quick thinking, innovative and insightful.

My song for the 44th Hive Open Mic is about the natural flows of energy, through the four directions. In my experience, the practice of honoring the four directions is a way of respecting the spirit and preparing for a spirited life. When I contemplate the four directions, I bring awareness to the flow of life and the natural cycles of nature, witnessing changes.

Here is the rock star, Prince, performing live in 1984. The man's stage presence is filled with screams, spins, slides... his performance here is stellar. "I Would Die 4 U" is the fourth single from the Purple Rain album. According to Wikipedia, this album spent 24 consecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200, certified 13x Platinum, with ~25 million sales, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.

I am grateful for the various ways this event stretches me as a music maker, generous listener, and patron of the arts. I enjoy the surprises, discovering songs that inspire me. My song for the 44th Hive Open Mic is about the natural flows of energy, through the four directions. In my experience, the practice of honoring the four directions is a way of respecting the spirit and preparing for a spirited life. When I contemplate the four directions, I bring awareness to the flow of life and the natural cycles of nature, witnessing changes.

Here is the rock star, Prince, performing live in 1984. The man's stage presence is filled with screams, spins, slides... his performance here is stellar. "I Would Die 4 U" is the fourth single from the Purple Rain album. According to Wikipedia, this album spent 24 consecutive weeks atop the Billboard 200, certified 13x Platinum, with ~25 million sales, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.

I am grateful for the various ways this event stretches me as a music maker, generous listener, and patron of the arts. I enjoy the surprises, discovering songs that inspire me. I get the impression we're all making progress, sharing our art with the world, making steady steps toward global harmony. And our unique way of honoring artists is centered around live music.
