It took me a while to decide what to record this week. I was going to do another cover, but it's been a busy week. Had to get to the workshop yesterday and get onto new tools and other things like bindings for a cuatro that's almost finished.
This week's topic is Optimism. It is a word I'm not too fond of hearing. I've met a lot of people who take this to heart and don't get their heads around the problems they have to face for anything they try do do. Life is hard, but I guess optimism in a good dose is something that can helps go through its harshness. I've been called a Pessimist too often, but I don't consider myself like it. If anything, I consider myself a Realist and life to think about problems and their solutions and have enough logical thinking to know when it is a good time to quit or when it's better to keep trying. However, the devil is in the details with these words.
My choice of music is Venezuelan Traditional. This song in particular is something many musicians learn to play early in their careers because it's easy. The genre is Venezuelan Merengue that has a big difference with Dominican Merengue changing the 6/8 measure for 5/8. This genre tends to be something foreigners struggle to comprehend, but one they do. Well, they enjoy it a lot. I know this kind of music is made for dancing, but I have never seen people dancing this kind of Merengue. It may be due to the fame of Dominican Merengue. Regardless, this soloist version comes by hand and mind of Félix Crudele.
Félix is one of those digital warriors and teacher who keep the torch of digitalization of Venezuelan music burning. He has a YouTube channel dedicated to teaching to play our beloved cuatro and this is one of the few soloist pieces he has available for any learner who has gone through the basics and wants to go into the world of Solo Cuatro.

Me tardé un poco en decidir qué grabar esta semana. Iba a hacer otro cover, pero han sido unos días muy ocupados. Tuve que ir al taller a hacer algunas herramientas nuevas y preparar la filetería de un cuatro que estoy por terminar.
El tema de esta semana es Optimismo. Esta no es una de mis palabras favoritas. He conocido a muchas personas que siguen esto como si fuera una religión y no suelen sortear muy bien las dificultades que se presentan a sus objetivos. La vida es dura, pero creo que una dosis controlada de optimismo nos ayuda defendernos de las espinas. En ocasiones, me han llamado Pesimista, pero no me considero así. Realista sería una mejor palabra para describirme en alguno de estos términos. Me gusta pensar y utilizar la lógica para tener en cuenta los obstáculos a sortear y tener alguna solución a los contratiempos. Sin embargo, creo que son términos en los cuales hay que leer la letra pequeña.
Mi elección de música sigue siendo Tradicional Venezolana. Esta canción en particular suele ser la bicicleta de muchos músicos. El género es Merengue Venezolano que se diferencia del Merengue Dominicano por tener una medida de 5/8 en lugar de 6/8. Esto es algo que toma a muchos músicos extranjeros por sorpresa, pero cuando se familirizan con el género lo disfrutan más que nosotros. Sé que esta música es bailable, pero nunca he visto cómo se baila. Supongo que tiene que ver con la fama del Merengue Dominicano. De cualquier manera, esta versión viene de mano y mente de Félix Crudele.
Félix es uno de los popularizadores del cuatro venezolano. Su canal de YouTube es una ventana para todos los que deseen aprender a tocar este instrumento. Su labor de digitalizar este contenido es valiosa en extremo. Esta es una de las piezas que ha preparado para cuatro solista. Y esta disponible para todos aquellos ejecutantes que han aprendido lo básico y quieren aventurarse al mundo de Solo Cuatro.
