Hello everyone and welcome to my blog at this hour. This is not the post I planned for today but I have to adjust my schedule to fit into the order of the day. I woke up to headlines about World Suicide Prevention Day and I feel it is not a bad idea to talk about it. Please sit back, relax and enjoy all that I have packaged for your reading pleasure.
Sucide is a phenomenon that happen all over the world and it is important to use this opportunity of World Suicide Prevention Day to talk about it. Sucide has claimed the life of so many people, therefore, it is a serious matter that need more people to talk about it. The trauma and regret that comes with losing someone to sucide is very painful knowing fully well that it could have been prevented. The feeling of "I wish I was there to help", "I wish I took her seriously when she complained about the issue with me" and so on.
In Nigeria, a ban was placed on the production of small bottles of a popular insecticide that is commonly used to commit suicide. The ban was necessary because the small bottles seems to be affordable for most people to buy, hence, the best option when suicidal thoughts comes to mind. This is an eye opener that we need to pay close attention to people around us. Observe and speak about any change you see in someone.
There are so many reasons people commit suicide. It could be due to the economic crisis in a country. When a person has lost all hope of feeding, housing and other good things of life, they might assume their future can not get better and it's better to just take their lives. Sucide could also be triggered by loneliness, heartbreak, among others. This is the reason why we need to pay attention to our mental health. Take care of your mental health. Victims of sucide do not just think about doing it in a day, it's as a result of series of events that have occurred overtime in their lives.
World Health Organization (WHO) in a report released stated that sucide is the 17th leading cause of death in World. However, sucide can be prevented if we are aware of the signals, pointers and actions that a suicidal person shows. It is important not to assume a person is joking or seeking attention when they claim they want to take their life. This is simply a cry for help and to avoid regrets that may last forever, let's speak up for such persons and help them get the help the need.
Some of these signals, pointers and actions exhibited by someone who have suicidal thoughts may include:
- a person is constantly complaining about being helpless and worthless
- threatens to kill themselves
- expressing desire to end his or her life
- writing or talking about suicide either through music, poetry, social media captions, etc
- giving out their cherished belongings to people and writing farewell messages in their diaries or online
Please don't ignore these signs if you observe it in someone. Talk to them about it in a manner that will show them that their is more to life and that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. This is the only way to save someone's life and avoid eternal regrets and traumatic experience.
