“Decluttering My Artwork”

Phew... Decluttering my clothes and stuff is not such a difficult action for me anymore because I started this decluttering habit a few years ago. Especially when I left Japan, I had to get rid of almost everything. However, I still want to organize my closet because things are piling up without me noticing. By the way, the decluttering concept word in Japanese “Danshari” is copyrighted so I don’t use that word for this article.

Gradually, I got rid of my clothes and nowadays I have less than 50 items including some underwear and lounge clothes in my closet. I think I want to get rid of them more. When I had around 80 items, it was a little bit difficult to get rid of more items because I couldn't organize my brain about which items I needed. I’m not going to be a minimalist but I think I want to be a simplist as much as I can.

To become a simplist... I had to go through my artwork. I have a small closet for my artwork, my lesson materials, translation stuff and more. I don’t pack this closet but I knew I had too much artwork.

First of all, I got rid of my cut paper art. This wasn't too difficult. Secondly, I got rid of my canvases of artwork. This was difficult. I showed these artworks at an exhibition before. This was my translation art project. I created these artworks following a poem which was not my poem. That's why it was very difficult to get rid of them. I don't hang these artworks at home but they are in my closet without anybody seeing them.

Hmm... I felt like I was very full. Finally, I decided to donate these artworks. The donation is for a second-hand store and they will support children. I think people simply buy artwork, reuse canvases or frames. Art materials are pretty expensive here so people reuse art materials sometimes.

After decluttering a lot of stuff including my artwork, I felt much lighter. I think I want to create artwork like the Tibetan Mandala concept. I don’t want to hold on to them for too long or I want to feel free from my artwork. I don’t want my artwork to control my feelings. Yet, decluttering is still a challenging action to me... it’s not easy to be free and simple all the time. I am also organizing my artwork images and data as well.
