On the value of recording votes on old posts

One recent and unexpected change to Hive was that the blockchain stopped allowing votes on old posts.

Much of the voting data is being stored in HiveMind now and perhaps they cut the option of voting on old posts to save on some database storage? Maybe they just didn't realize all the use cases for this thinking that many people see voting action as only good for reward determination.

I would like to petition the return to allowing votes on any post

We are not talking about old (past 7 days) posts getting rewarded when they get voted.
That was never the case... however voting has more benefits than just impacting rewards.

1. USER EXPERIENCE

  • It's awkward experience to not allow users to hit the vote button and be counted in those who have "liked" their post
  • New users wouldn't understand why they can't hit the heart button on PeakD

2. MANY FEATURES WE CAN USE WITH VOTES

  • In-Person Likes: We have it planned to keep track and count anytime someone actually hits the heart button on a post on peakd.com. Right now vote count is a mostly useless stat because of the number of auto-votes and vote trails. But we can make it much more useful in the future and have had this planned for some time. We believe that it would turn the mostly useless stat into something that users may find very interesting and inspiring.
  • Awards Via Votes: We are presently working on awarding posts in the UI. We have had MOST VIEWED page for a while and it's been pretty helpful and decently popular, it's based on rolling stats... we would like to go further and officially award the "TOP" posts of the day and week and maybe even month and have a sort of Hall of Fame. Voting trails are incredibly easy and fast at creating post feeds and that would mean that we would want to vote on these posts which some of them could be older than 7 days. Specially monthly awards.

  • Voting Trails: There are curating projects that show posts based on votes
    @curie/trail
    Granted most of them only review NEW posts but this does limit any curation projects that want to deal with older posts

  • Admin Options: There are actually a slew of other features that we want to do that are easiest done with a simple vote from an account.

Reasons not to?
I'm open to hearing reasons why it shouldn't come back but so far I just know of tons of benefits of keeping it. It wasn't abused prior to this (not even sure of how it could even be abused)... I really just think that people just didn't know it was being used and all of it's benefits even beyond calculating reward value at the end of 7 days.

UPDATE:

They have added a ticket to add this support back to hive and responded that it was a mistake to remove support during hf24... but the sad news is it will have to wait until the next hard fork so some of these features will have to wait for a while.
