Hive Developer Jobs Portal

The Hive Dev Jobs Portal needs more developers to fill out their technical profiles and sign up to be connected with a range of work opportunities within the Hive ecosystem. The sole purpose of the portal and service is to support the dapps, ventures and projects on Hive.

Background

Last year I announced the creation of the Dev Jobs Portal.

The portal itself is a submission page for developers to fill out and list their skills, experience, project preferences and hourly rates. When an opportunity comes up, I will go through the submissions and select the person who has the skills and is presently available to take on the job. I will then make the connection or introduction. Additional portal features, such as a location to post jobs, are in place but have not been used yet.

The Dev Jobs Portal doesn't just include the technical profiles of the developers locally available on Hive. It also does recruitment rounds at intervals and seeks to bring in outside talent. Developers brought in are encouraged to learn more about Hive and to start building their own projects or engage with the community while waiting for suitable opportunities to arrive.

Many Successes

Most developers who submitted to the Dev Jobs Portal have been connected with a potential project at some point. Not all connections are successful, nor are they meant to be. This isn't a placement agency. Developers and project owners are meant to be connected in order to discuss the opportunity and move forward if it is mutually suitable to all parties.

This is a service I enjoy contributing to the Hive ecosystem and do for free. No money changes hands in my direction at any point in the process, even if the connection is highly profitable to the involved parties. Due to the confidentiality involved, this is a service I provide on my own without any partners.

I do verify credentials, ability, code and references where possible. If someone cannot be verified but may have the requisite skills, I may still connect them with warnings. Developers who have attempted to lie about their experience, are unprofessional or go MIA with no notice are not connected. The same goes for project owners. If someone is known for blatant scamming, not paying their developers or trying to nag them down to work for upvotes, they've come to the wrong place. This is a professional service and will stay that way.

Current Problem

Currently a good portion of the most reliable and skilled developers are fully-booked and others ended up looking for work elsewhere as remote working becomes common. The topmost limit I aim to connect for is two projects per developer at the same time. That means the developer can do part-time hours on both, or full-time hours on one and part-time on the other. Due to a lack of available developers, there are a few who are on three or more projects.

That being said, this isn't just a developer availability issue. Projects must be able to support the hourly rates requested by developers. A guy who has 30 years experience isn't going to work for $20/hours because that costs him more in opportunity cost than its worth. There are times where a senior developer can go onto a $20 project, but those cases are very rare as everyone has to be confident the task can be achieved in a fraction of the time it would typically take. $20/hr for 5 hours and $100/hr for 1 hour are after all the same thing. The issue here is the price of HIVE is lower than we want it to be and projects are self-funding.

Now I know many reading this will turn around and say "well why don't they fund through the DHF" but the reality is many can't get proposals across the finish line and many, many more give up before even trying. As a result, we are where we are, with projects looking to fill vacancies but in an economical manner.

Take the Opportunity

This is why the Dev Jobs Portal needs more developer profiles of all types and hourly rates. If you are a developer or know a developer who is interested in joining the blockchain ecosystem of Hive, fill out the form or pass it on to your contact.
