The topocho is actually a variety of plantain that originated in southern Asia, although it became known when it reached the Mediterranean in 650 AD. The topocho is one of the most drought-resistant banana varieties. It has a smaller than normal appearance, with an almost straight and rather thick body. When ripe, the skin turns yellow and the interior takes on a light pink color.
