Everton got halted in the race for a top four finish when they visited the Villa Park. It was a game that could go either way but went neither way with the chances each team had.

Villa had the first chance from Douglas Luiz's cross into the box and Tyron Mings should have done better. He connected so well with the ball but he was unable to steer it into the back of the net. It was a shocking miss especially from that distance.

Martinez came to the rescue of Villa when Sigurdsson delivered a freekick into the box. Godfrey tried to connect with it from the near post but he was unable to beat the goalkeeper with his leg.

Pickford made a meal of El Ghazi's freekick and punched it clear. The ball was almost direct at him and seeing how reaction to the ball he made the delivery look more threatening than it should be.

Everton were also denied at the other end when Calvert-Lewin's header was saved by Martinez. The follow up came from Doucoure whose shot bounced off the ground and came to Richarlison. His header went over the bar also as he had little chance to react to it. It was a big miss for Everton but what a season Martinez is having.

The game ended in a stalemate and there was no winner to the 206th league meetings between the two sides. Both teams could have won it but it wasn't meant to be.
