Host Rennes suffered a 1-2 defeat at the hands of Chelsea in the Champions League Group E preliminary round, Wednesday, 11/25/2020. Rennes's defeat came in the final minutes of the match, after Chelsea substitute striker Oliver Giroud scored and changed the result to 1-2.

Playing at Roazhon Park Stadium, Rennes as the host immediately pressed the Chelsea defense area from the early minutes, through a collaborative attack built by Steven Nzonzi, Sehrou Guirassy and Eduardo Camavinga, they tried to dismantle the defense of The Blues Chelsea which was fortified by Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma. Chelsea, who rely on Timo Werner, Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho, are able to make several golden opportunities and try to continue to dismantle the Rennes defense.

Hudson-Odoi opened Chelsea's lead in the 22nd minute by completing Mason Mount's long pass. Through attacks built through the midfield, Hudson-Odoi was able to outwit goalkeeper Alferd Gomis. Score 0-1 for Chelsea.

One goal behind made Rennes appear more dominant, by controlling the game and creating many chances to score goals. Rennes produced 13 kicks at Chelsea's Chelsea goal, Rennes had two consecutive chances from Guirassy and a Gerzinho Nyamsi header, but his former goalkeeper, Edouard Mendy, performed brilliantly to deny them both.

Rennes was only able to equalize to 1-1 in the 85th minute through a Guirassy goal, the goal came from a corner shot by Benjamin Bourigeaud. Through a header, Guirassy was able to outwit the Chelsea goalkeeper who was escorted by Edouard Mendy. However, the score at 1-1 did not last long, in the 89th minute Chelsea were able to get back ahead of Rennes through Olivier Giroud's goal. He managed to gore the ball rushing into the Rennes goal. Rennes 1-2 Chelsea.

With this victory Chelsea managed to qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League, while Rennes had to bury their dreams to continue to the next round.
