What comes to your mind when you see an insect with spikes?
Well yes, you guessed that right. Defense mechanism.
This is the photo of a black spiky caterpillar (Hypercompe scribonia) from Wikipedia.
I did some research on the subject and I found out that those spikes were venomous but not like that of vipers but the sting was enough to cause a burning sensation and skin irritations.
Also, they metamorphosize into moths and butterfly
However, as there are venomous caterpillars, there are also poisonously caterpillars.
You might be wondering what the difference is.
Let me tell you
Venomous:they choose when to let out their poison, they are in control compared to poisonous insects which give out poison when in contact.
Some examples of poisonous caterpillars are bag caterpillar, cinnabar and stinging rose.
The photos I have are photos of the eyed tiger caterpillars.
