Some visitors to the garden and their description (Eng) // Algunos visitantes del jardín y su descripción (Esp)

Greetings dear friends of the Hive platform, welcome once again to my blog. Here I share with you some pictures of some arthropods that I managed to make.

Yesterday afternoon, while doing maintenance on the plants in the garden, I managed to photograph some small invertebrate visitors. First on the list is a caterpillar of the erebidae family, more specifically a species of the genus Hypercompe. Moths of this species are white in color and have conspicuous colorations along the wings and abdomen.

The caterpillars, on the other hand, tend to have inconspicuous colors, this is because they are nocturnal species, so it is in those hours of the day when they become active and begin to feed on plant species.

Caterpillars have soft and elongated bodies, this is technically known as eruciform body; furthermore, there are always variants depending on the insect to which the caterpillar belongs, by this I mean that caterpillars of Lepidoptera and Coleoptera are not the same at the morphological level, to mention a few examples.

These lepidopteran caterpillars are provided with 5 pairs of false legs, these small extremities perform a function similar to the suction cups of octopuses and thanks to them they can adhere to plants. On the other hand, they also have 6 legs that are the real ones, these can be seen in the first 3 segments of their body, in short, they are the 3 pairs that are close to their head.

At the head level, these juvenile insects are provided with a chewing type mouthparts, thanks to their powerful jaws they can destroy the plant tissues they need to feed.

The vision of caterpillars is not very good, they have tiny simple eyes that do not help them much to observe their environment; however, they are very sensitive to changes in their habitat. It must be remembered that the caterpillar will become a majestic moth after finishing its metamorphosis, and in this state it will have one of the best views of the arthropod world thanks to its compound eyes.

Many caterpillars have their bodies covered with spines or irritating pubescence, thanks to this defense mechanism they can repel predators or aggressors. I have always recommended not to handle this type of caterpillars, since many people are unaware of this type of natural defense used by these insects and accidents can occur, there are species that are very dangerous, however, the species Hypercompe sp is not dangerous to the touch.

The caterpillar of the moth Hypercompe sp when it feels threatened, tends to roll up its body, thus becoming a ball of thorns, making it difficult for any animal to ingest it.

The second visitor to the garden was an arachnid of the family salticidae, the species corresponds to a Leptofreya ambigua. These small spiders are very popular and eye-catching because of their huge single eyes, it is very common to see them jumping from one place to another either inside the house or among the plants.

When I approached to photograph it, this little spider jumped towards my hand. It is important to mention that this type of arachnid is completely harmless, they are biological controllers of small insects and their favorite arthropod is flies; so if you see one, never kill it.
