What is PoweringDown and PoweringUp?

PoweringUP is the act of taking liquid ("spendable") HIVE and "staking" it into HivePower (HP), which is similar to buying stock in a company. The PowerUp process is one of the options in your Hive Wallet. The more HP you have, the more Resource Credits (RC) you will have for conducting transactions on the blockchain (posting, commenting, upvoting, sending funds, claiming accounts, etc.), the more value your upvotes will have, and you will receive periodic dividends (extra HP) added to your account. You can PowerUp at any time, but if you do it on the first day of the month, you can participate in Hive PowerUp Day (HivePUD) and have a chance to win prizes!

PoweringDown is the opposite of PoweringUp. It is the act of taking your staked HivePower (HP) and converting it to liquid ("spendable") HIVE again. To prevent abuse of the system, the amount you choose to PowerDown will be paid-out over a 13-week period. For example, if you choose to PowerDown 1300 HP, you will receive 100 HIVE each week for 13 weeks. You can stop a PowerDown at any time.

What is a lease?
A lease is when you agree to pay someone to borrow HivePower (HP) or when you loan someone HP and they agree to pay you. It's similar to the way a loan works at a bank, and is usually only necessary when someone launches a new project on-chain and needs some initial support for it until it finds its own footing.

What is HiveSBI?
HiveStakedBasicIncome (HiveSBI) is "basic income" project on Hive that awards votes on your posts proportional to the amount of HiveSBI you hold. You cannot buy HiveSBI for yourself, you can only buy units of HiveSBI for others. However, for each unit you buy for someone else, you get one for yourself, in return.

How does Voting Power work?
Everyone on the blockchain starts with 100% Voting Power (VP). When you upvote a post, a small amount of your VP is used to cast that vote. VP recharges at a rate of 20% per day. So, if you upvote 10 posts at 100% power, you will have 80% remaining. If you cast 20 votes per day at 100% power, your VP will drop to 60%, and so forth. However, if you can cast 20 votes per day at 50% power, you will have 80% remaining. It's just simple math.
Note that the power of your vote affects the amount of the vote given. Say that you have enough HivePower (HP) that makes you vote worth $0.04 at 100% power. If you upvote someone's post at 50% power, then the value of your vote will only be worth $0.02, and $0.01 at 25% power, etc.
We recommend keeping your VP at 80% or above so that it will be completely recharged in one day, if you plan to be active on Hive every day. If you are going away for a few days, it is fine to let it drop lower so that it will be fully recharged when you return. I try to keep my VP at 80% minimum, so our staff memeber @thekittygirl created the following chart in MS EXCEL so I can easily see how many votes I will have at different percentages:
