Mi ciudad, en la que vivo desde que nací, fue fundada el 4 de junio de 1514 por Diego Velázquez, conocido conquistador español, quien además fundó otras 6 Villas en Cuba, por lo cual tiene 509 años de antigüedad, siendo de las primeras en la Isla. Primeramente, fue localizada cerca del Río Tuinucú aproximadamente a unos 8 kilómetros de su posición actual y luego en 1522 fue trasladada donde se encuentra hasta la actualidad a orillas del emblemático Río Yayabo.
My city, where I have lived since I was born, was founded on June 4, 1514 by Diego Velázquez, a well-known Spanish conquistador, who also founded 6 other Villas in Cuba, making it 509 years old, one of the first on the island. Como tercer renglón económico se destaca el turismo debido a la conservación de su centro histórico con edificaciones construidas desde el siglo XVIII.
Its main economic activities are the cultivation of sugar cane and its exploitation in the sugar industry and its different derivatives, among which the exquisite Cuban rum stands out. In addition, the cattle raising activity is remarkable, although it has diminished in recent times as in the whole country. The third economic sector is tourism due to the preservation of its historic center with buildings constructed since the 18th century.
Entre las majestuosas y antiguas edificaciones antes mencionadas podemos encontrar la Iglesia Parroquial Mayor construida en el año 1680, el museo de Arte Colonial, también conocido como el museo de las "Cien Puertas", la " Casa de la Guayabera " sitio con una amplia colección de este tipo de prenda y la insignia de la Villa espirituana, el Puente sobre el Río Yayabo.
Among the majestic and ancient buildings mentioned above we can find the Main Parish Church built in 1680, the Colonial Art Museum, also known as the museum of the "Hundred Doors", the "Casa de la Guayabera", a site with a large collection of this type of garment and the insignia of the Villa Espirituana, the Bridge over the Yayabo River.
El Puente sobre el Río Yayabo, emblema de la Villa de Sancti Spíritus fue comenzado a construirse en el año 1817 por necesidad de los ciudadanos de conectar dos puntos de la ciudad, los encargados de la obra fueron los maestros albañiles Domingo Valverde y Blas Cabrera. Los materiales utilizados fueron ladrillo, cal y arena (según el argot popular también fue utilizada leche de chiva para fortalecer la mezcla), la obra fue culminado en el año 1831. Hoy en día, gracias a diferentes trabajos de mantenimiento y reformas, el puente está en perfecto estado y conserva su esplendor.
The bridge over the Yayabo River, emblem of the Villa de Sancti Spíritus was begun to be built in the year 1817 by the need of the citizens to connect two points of the city, those in charge of the work were the master masons Domingo Valverde and Blas Cabrera. The materials used were brick, lime and sand (according to popular slang, goat's milk was also used to strengthen the mixture), the work was completed in 1831. Today, thanks to various maintenance and renovation works, the bridge is in perfect condition and retains its splendor.
En esta tierra han nacido destacadas personalidades, pero ahora les menciono dos que sobresalen entre todas. En primer lugar, tenemos a Serafín Sánchez Valdivia, patriota cubano que se destacó en las tres guerras de independencia ante la colonia española, maestro de profesión, participó en más de 120 combates y llegó a alcanzar el grado de Mayor General. En segundo lugar, menciono al pelotero Frederich Cepeda Cruz, hombre récord del béisbol en Cuba, con múltiples títulos a nivel internacional y con excelentes participaciones en Clásicos Mundiales de Béisbol.
In this land have been born outstanding personalities, but now I mention two that stand out among them all. In the first place, we have Serafín Sánchez Valdivia, a Cuban patriot who stood out in the three wars of independence against the Spanish colony, a teacher by profession, participated in more than 120 battles and reached the rank of Major General. In second place, I mention the baseball player Frederich Cepeda Cruz, record man of baseball in Cuba, with multiple titles at international level and with excellent participations in World Baseball Classics.
