ইউক্লিড ছিলেন একজন বিখ্যাত হেলেনিস্টিক গণিতজ্ঞ। ইউক্লিডকে “ফাদার অফ জিওমেট্রি” ও বলা হয়। গণিতের বিভিন্ন শাখা যেমনঃ পাটিগণিতের মূল নিয়মাবলী, জ্যামিতি, গানিতিক রাশি ও গাণিতিক সংকেত, সংখ্যাতত্ত্বে তার অবদান রয়েছে। অমূলদ রাশির আবিষ্কার গ্রিক গণিতকে যে সংকটে ফেলেছিল তা থেকে উদ্ধার পেতে পাটিগণিত জ্যামিতির দিকে ঝুঁকে পড়েছিল আর ইউক্লিডের গণিতেরও অনেকটাকেই বলা যেতে পারে জ্যামিতিক বীজগণিত। তাঁর প্রধান বৈজ্ঞানিক গ্রন্থ “ইউক্লিড’স এলিমেন্টস“। এতে আলোচনা আছে তলমিতি ও ঘ্নমিতি এবং সংখ্যাতত্ত্বের বিভিন্ন সমস্যা যেমন অ্যালগরিদম নিয়ে। ইউক্লিড রচিত “ইউক্লিড এলিমেন্টস” বইটি বিজ্ঞানী গ্যালিলিও গ্যালিলি, নিকোলাস কোপারনিকাস, জোহানেস কেপলার এবং বিশেষভাবে আইজাক নিউটন কে প্রবল্ভাবে প্রভাবিত করে। এবং তারা সবাই বইটি থেকে প্রাপ্ত জ্ঞান কে বিভিন্নভাবে কাজে লাগিয়াছেন।
“ইউক্লিড এলিমেন্টস” বইটি প্রায় ২০০০ বছর পর্যন্ত বিভিন্ন ভাবে পাঠযোগ্য হিসেবে ব্যাবহৃত হয়েছে। বইটি মূলত জ্যামিতি শাস্ত্রের বিভিন্ন স্বীকার্য নিয়ে কাজ করে। বইটি জনপ্রিয়তা পাওয়ার মুল কারন হলো প্রতিটি তত্ত্ব নিয়ে সুস্পষ্ট লজিক বা যুক্তি বা বলা যায় ইউক্লিডের কাছে থাকা তার গানিতিক যুক্তিগত বিদ্যা। ইউক্লিড এলিমেন্টস বইটিতে ইউক্লিড কিছু অংশে জ্যামিতি কে সংখ্যাতত্ত্বের মাধ্যমে প্রকাশ করার চেষ্টা করেছেন। কারন হিসেবে ধারনা করা হত পাটিগণিত হ্মেত্রে তিনি খুব একটা উন্নতি করতে পারেন নি।
প্রকুলাস এর মতে ইউক্লিড এর জন্ম হওয়া উচিত ছিল টলেমির যুগে, কারন হিসেবে তিনি বলেছেনগ্রীক গণিতবিদ আর্কিমিডিসের কথা। তিনি বলতেন আর্কিমিডিসের ও আরো আগে ইউক্লিড গণিত বিষয়ে তার তত্ত্ব সমূহ উপস্থাপন করেন।
প্রকুলাস এই কথাটি আবার টলেমি কে বলেন , যখন টলেমি প্রকুলাস এর কাছে জানতে চেয়েছিল ইউক্লিড এলিমেন্টস ছাড়া জ্যামিতি শিখার আর কোন সহজ উপায় বা পদ্ধতি আছে কিনা?
ইউক্লিডের জন্ম, মৃত্যু সম্পর্কে বিশেষ কিছু জানা যায় নি, শুধু জানা যায় তিনি মিশরের আলেকজান্ড্রিয়ায় বসবাস করতেন। তার রচিত তিনটি বই ইউক্লিড এলিমেন্টস, ইউক্লিডীয়ান জিওমেট্রি, ইউক্লিডিয়ান এলগরিদাম। ছাপাখান আবিষ্কারের পর সর্বপ্রথম মূদ্রিত হয়া বই এর মধ্যে ইউকিড এলিমেন্টস এর নাম অন্যতম। বইটি ১০০০ এর ও বেশি বার মুদ্রিত হয়েছে।
