Era la fortaleza principal de la ciudad de Gibraltar durante los asedios de las tropas francesas y españolas en el siglo XVIII. Está construido sobre otro fuerte español.
It was the main fortress of the city of Gibraltar during the sieges by French and Spanish troops in the 18th century. It is built on the site of another Spanish fort.
Ubicado en el centro de la ciudad antigua y en la misma orilla del mar junto al puerto, ha sido remodelado y fortalecido en varias ocasiones hasta quedar dentro de la ciudad cuando se le ha ido ganando terreno al mar de la Bahía de Algeciras. En esta fotografía de 1874 expuesta en el interior del bastión, se puede comparar con la que hice más o menos desde el mismo lugar.
Located in the centre of the old city and on the very edge of the sea next to the port, it has been remodelled and strengthened several times until it became part of the city as it gained ground from the sea in the Bay of Algeciras. In this photograph from 1874 exposed inside the bastion, you can compare it with the one I took from more or less the same place.
En la fotografía se puede observar una de sus últimas remodelaciones para instalar los grandes cañones de 18 toneladas que aún se conservan y que se ven sus bocas desde el frente del fuerte.
In the photograph you can see one of the last remodelling works to install the large 18-ton guns that still remain and whose muzzles can be seen from the front of the fort.
En la actualidad ya no tiene uso militar sirviendo como un centro de ocio con una gran bolera y restaurantes.
Today it is no longer in military use and serves as a leisure centre with a large bowling alley and restaurants.
En esta fotografía se puede ver los polvorines donde se guardaba la munición de los cañones que ahora están llenos de máquinas recreativas.
In this photograph you can see the magazines where the ammunition for the cannons was kept, which are now full of amusement machines.
Los laterales del bastión ahora son bonitos parques llenos de plantas y juegos para los más pequeños.
The sides of the bastion are now beautiful parks full of plants and games for children.
La parte posterior aun conserva su largo pasillo original con oficinas, que eran los despachos de los mandos militares.
The back of the bastion still has its original long corridor with offices, which were the offices of the military commanders.
