A lot more people these days are distilling water for many reasons including safety. The debate on which water is better for you from Spring water, distilled water, hard water or even rain water rages on. This is in no way a post of all the different types of water and/or solutions for your needs. The general rule of thumb in water health and safety is boil and filter. However with a little more research of the types of water in your area and some basic precautions you will be well on your way to a healthier lifestyle.

DISTILLING WATER
Once you learn how to distill water you are much better off in any situation. However distilling water takes the water to its most basic form and will lack the much needed minerals you need in your diet and for overall good health. There are many ways to supplement this. Eating fruits and vegetables with high mineral content is one. Taking a liquid mineral supplement or vitamin and mineral pill or you can use pink Himalayan salt which has on average anywhere from 84 to 88 different trace minerals in it naturally. Be sure to buy this from a reputable salt dealer or store that gets true pink Himalayan salt. There are a lot of companies that color their salt pink and try to pass it off as the original.

WATER SAFETY
Overall the best first solution is testing your water if possible. This gives you a general idea of the type of water and amount of contaminants you are dealing with. Most regions have a water testing facility in their area. If that is not available, the water can be shipped off to be tested. Research a testing facility nearest you for testing.

TREATMENT SOLUTIONS
This will vary according to what you are faced with. As I said earlier there are many factors that determine healthy drinking water. Keep it simple but be aware that it may still be best to boil and filter. There are water purification tablets that can be used in a short term situation (Hiking, camping or just being lost) but overall this method is NOT a long term solution and says so on many packages. A more long term solution that is safe would be to use Colloidal Silver. Adding Colloidal silver to your water will kill off bacteria and make the water safe to drink. Be sure to do your research on Colloidal Silver and buy it from a reputable company. Better yet it can be made yourself using a professional Colloidal / Ionic Silver generator. As a side note, dairy farmers used to throw a silver coin in their milk buckets while milking the cows to kill any bacteria that may occur. This helped the milk to last much longer than normal. Sometimes the old ways are just the best ways.

FILTERING WATER
There are many ways to filter water. The most simple way that doesn't involve a whole house system are commercial water filter systems like a Berkey or perhaps a ceramic filter that can be used in a homemade 2 five gallon bucket system.

Don't be fooled into thinking you need to buy the biggest and best water purification and filtering systems out there. Some basic steps and know how will get you through. The method of using a 2 five gallon bucket system is what I chose to do myself. It is only for my wife and myself but if you have a larger family you can expand your system to fit your needs. The ceramic bowl shaped filters are silver impregnated to help kill off any germs and for the most part are pretty reasonable in price. Stock some up! Also be sure to get activated charcoal to help purify your water. I buy this by the bag and make my own pre filter system with layers of sand and activated charcoal. If distilling your own water be sure to add liquid minerals to it or take some form of mineral supplement or add pink Himalayan salt to your diet. Take the time to do a little research on this subject. Without clean fresh water your family may not survive for very long in a disaster situation. This is one subject worth exploring!
