Other People's Money Discussion

untitled.gifWhile I was watching this movie, I kept making comparisons to the movie we watched last week “Joy”. Whie they are both pretty good movies “Joy” did a good job of showing what it's like in the business world for entrepreneurs and in this movie, “Other People's Money” it showed the wall street side of business. How stockholders get their stock, how to make profits off companies. Larry the Liquidator shows how ruthless you must be to succeed. In this movie Larry falls in love with a woman named Kate Sullivan, but she is the daughter of the company that he is trying to buy. All while she is also a lawyer trying to get Larry to not buy her dad's company. They banter back and forth about deals they could agree on, but they never decide on one. Lary wants to buy the company and sell bits and pieces of it to make room for innovation because he has the mindset of an entrepreneur. All while trying to win Kate over Larry is still trying to get her dad's company.

During the AGM speech Jorgy (the owner of New England Wire and cable) talks about how Larry just kills everything in his way to make him more money and that he is heartless and doesn’t care if he put numerous people out of work when he buys this company. Jorgy is trying to sway people to vote his way, so he gets to keep his own company and make Larry seem like the bad guy. When all Larry is doing is just his job. In his speech he claims he cares more about his employees than what his stockholder shares are or how much money he makes. In the end though Larry won the vote which left Jorgy feeling defeated and devastated. Toward the end of the movie Kate calls Larry and calls him numerous mean things and he is just sitting on his chair smiling. Once she finished calling him names, she then brings up that the Japanese want to collaborate with New England Wire and Cable to make air bags for cars. His ears then perched up at this and she said let's make a deal. She said she wanted to buy back the company at a very agreeable price so it’s a win win or everyone.

I think in the end it all worked out because entrepreneurs know what they are doing when they want to buy a company. Mostly because they have already quite literally worked everything out in their heads and how it could go. I think this movie did a good job showing that when someone looks like a bad guy (such as Larry for wanting to buy out the company) it was overall super beneficial to everyone in the long run, and people just were not aware of that. I think being an entrepreneur is all about taking risks but doing all the research beforehand, so you are aware of all the possible outlooks.
