The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22-23
The account goes thus, Judg 2:7-12 "And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord, that he did for Israel... And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel. And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served Baalim: And they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods..."
The Hebrew word for 'know' here is Yada. Before yada is used, it must be in conjunction with "observation, recognition, acquaintance and such observation and acquaintance has led to some instruction'. Therefore, to know here means that the object worth knowing has been carefully observed, and based on the observation some instructional information inferred.
Joshua and the elders observed the Lord and came to some logical conclusion - that the 'Lord is Lord indeed'. This reasoning made them effective in leadership. They were able to guide Israel aright; and therefore the nation prospered. Unfortunately, the children of these same faithful people did not 'yada' the Lord and the consequence - an errant life.
There are enough people on this planet who say that they love the Lord; enough to cause nations to prospers, but we don't see the effect of their proclaimed 'love for God'. Why? Their conversations portray that though they say they love Him with their mouth, their hearts are far from Him. When we walk away from light, darkness envelops. In the dark we stumble, fall, hurt ourselves or worse, we are attacked and defeated.
