Most of cinema history was with clear distinction of noble good guy and a villain. Villain was usually a rich evil guy, mobster or someone who hurt a family member. We even have 3 filmfare awards before Best Hero, Best Villain and Best Comedian. Best actor award is a very recent concept.
But it's important to note why we love gangster movies. We don't dislike them, we actually adore them. Heres why:
We love the fact that gangsters have chelas/followers who take orders and would even die for them. At heart everyone desires to be leading a tribe.
We love the fact that Gangsters doesn't follow orders and does what he/she wants. Most of are slaves of rules and orders laid by others, seeing a free person makes us happy.
We love the fact that Gangster that have fancy life and super cars and unlimited money to spend. A secret desire we all have. We love to see them splurge on screens without worry.
We love their strength and power. We love how they are able to control outcomes or even use violence to get what they want. We project our animal instincts through them.
We love how life and people around gangster revolved around them and often get a lot of fear and respect from all. We love how everyone notices when they arrive in the room.
A gangster usually projects themselves to be above law, almost god like and often gives justice and invokes our inner tribal leader needs.
We love how they can jump queues or not wait for anything and just barge into any place they want.
We love taboos. We are intrigued by things that are not allowed like a child. We see them doing having no taboos and often do things which are morally incorrect. We love to see them do stuff we wont have guts to even try.
We love to see them dare and chase scary and ambitious goals, which we fail to do in our daily lives.
We love how they have to work the least compared to others to get the best mating success and often have multiple attractive mating partners.
What we could learn from Gangster is their ability to risk it all and have crazy ambition and skip the immoral bits :-)
