After a shout from their leader, eight young Iroquois warriors ran swiftly in pursuit. Within a hundred yards, they had the sailor on the ground, and he struggled in vain against their strength, yelling and cursing and kicking his feet!
With a slight smile still on his face, the leader jogged down and stood gazing at the strange man.
“He is French!” (translated) The Indian said as he pointed to the uniform, “Let loose...”

The warriors released the young sailor and he scrambled backwards a few feet, digging his heels into the sand…
“I am a sailor of the Royal French Navy!” (translated) He yelled out in proper French.
The Indian leader laughed again and finally held out his hand. The sailor cautiously took it and stood up, dusting the debris off his clothing and synching-up his belt. (See: @joshuaslane/silver-adventures-captain-joshua-slane-08se21-oh-god-don-t-say-that )

[In the Indian canoes...North-East Lake Ontario...]

08MR.2.jpg

The long canoe trip across the north-east waters of Great Lake Ontario took it’s toll on the remnant French crew of the La Serpant. The Iroquois warriors chatted amongst themselves in an incomprehensible tongue, sometimes laughing, sometimes sneering at their foreign passengers. But with three ounces of French silver in their fur duffle they kept their word for safe passage to Fort Kingston.

First Mate Louis gritted his teeth at the memory of losing his Commander on Main Duck Island. He had vowed revenge against the Scots and he was determined to get it, at whatever cost. (See: “”There will be a bounty on Captain Slane’s head!” @joshuaslane/silver-adventures-captain-joshua-slane-20ja21-cold-exit-warm-welcome )

As the three heavily ladened canoes cross the straights between Amherst and Wolfe Islands, the rising camp smoke of Fort Kingston came plainly into view.

A garrison of French soldiers manned the fort, led by a French Governor who oversaw all trade on the eastern side of Lake Ontario. Now just a half mile off, Louis could see a group of soldiers massing on the docks on the southern edge of the Fort.

“By God I will give the governor an ear-full when I see him!” [Translated] Louis said bitterly to a French sailor who sat next to him, “The whole of France will hunt this devil Slane!”

[On the Silverton…the captain’s Great Cabin…]

Warrant Officer Errislravenhill stood unsteadily in front of the captain with junior Petty Officer Ilversvaver888 at her side.

“Arenae ye supposed tae be restin'?” The Captain said as he lit his pipe and stoked the embers red hot.

The captain’s eyes were red and his face was showing obvious stress. The concern for Galligan was heavy on all of their minds. With a nod he beckoned Ilversaver888 to leave them to their privacy. She quickly saluted and closed the door behind her.

“Hack himself said ye waur unfit fur surgery…”
“Aye he did…ain Ahh wasnae…but Ahh’m fit noo!” Errisl replied in as steady of a voice as she could muster.

The Captain eyed her carefully as he let out a large plume of blue smoke into the room...
