Standing by free speech _no matter what_

I'm going to try to make this abundantly clear because it clearly isn't for people like Will Wilkinson.

Free speech advocates aren't trying to silence arguments against free speech and people who are against cancel culture aren't trying to stifle debate about the validity of cancel culture. We live way too much of our lives in those conversations. A part of being an advocate for free speech is being part of the 2% of the people on the planet who stand by free speech no matter what and throwing ourselves into a swarm of piranhas who think that the lines of free speech should be drawn on the basis of ideology and opinions. We're not trying to stifle debate about cancel culture. The debate was brought to us. We didn't create it. We just make noises when the rest of you do stupid stuff and silence thoughts and opinions.

Any accusation flung at us that we're trying to mute conversation about the limitations of free speech by the people who actually actively trying to stifle free speech are nonsensical.

If you weren't trying to make opinions illegal, you wouldn't hear from us. If you weren't calling for mob rule to silence unpopular speech, you wouldn't hear from us.

You ignite the conversation and we try to respond. When we respond, you call the sensible noises that people make in response to authoritarian defense of the orthodoxy with insistence that the defenders of freedom are the authoritarians.
