Florence Nightingale was born on the 12th May 1820 in the city of Florence, Italy, while her English parents were spending a vacation there. So the parents named her Florence after the famous city.

Her parents were very rich and she had all the wealth to lead a comfortable life. But after completing her education she decided to be a social worker, more precisely a nurse.

Though she knew that the path selected by her will be a very tiresome and difficult one that demanded dedication, she stuck to her decision firmly.

When she told her parents that she wanted to be a nurse they were furious, and their abjection was vehement.
Florence was unable to enter a training institution in England due to the pressure of her parents. So she went to Germany and had her wish fulfilled. It is reported that the authorities of the German training college have commented that she was a born nurse.

After returning to England she set up a small training college to train nurses. The trainees were taught that they are the members of one of the noblest services of the world. The Crimean war broke out in 1854. Several countries including England and Russia were involved in the war.

Nightingale heard how badly the wounded English soldiers were treated in the camps. They had no medicine, and no one to nurse them. Doctors too were scarce.

Florence left England for Crimea with a band of well trained nurses. She visited the wounded and sick soldiers, nursed them and made a very orderly and efficient arrangement to treat them.

She was an untiring woman with great courage. She believed in dedicated work. Even at the dead of the night she used to visit wards with a lamp to see how the wounded and sick soldiers fared.

Within two or three weeks after her arrival in Crimea, there was a great improvement in the life of the soldiers, and she saved a lot of lives.

Nightingale was called ‘The Lady of The Lamp’ by the soldiers and they loved and respected her.

Florence Nightingale founded modern nursing and is best known for her great humanitarian activities in the Crimean War. In 1860 she founded the Nightingale School and Home for Training of Nurse, at St Thomas Hospital London.

Nightingale was honoured by the British Government for the noble services rendered by her by conferring the Order of Merit upon her. Even today the nurses have to take the ‘Nightingale Oath’ when they pass out from the training school.

Florence Nightingale passed away on the 13th August 1910, in London.
