Capsule Film Review: Alien 3 (1992)

First two parts of Alien film series were genre classics, so it was too much to expect that the third would be too. Even with that in mind, 1992 science fiction film Alien 3 proved to be major disappointment. Plot begins with the series heroine Ellen Ripley (played by Sigourney Weaver) awaking after cryogenic sleep, this time on Fiona "Fury" 161, planet that serves as a penal colony for the most vicious criminals. Ripley, who was sole survivor of space ship crash, suspects that she brought alien xenomorphic monster with her and her suspicions are proven correct; what follows is almost hopeless struggle for survival, the convicts lack any firearms or effective weapons. Directed by David Fincher in his feature debut, Alien 3 won some of the more snobbish critics with sometimes bold choices in style. Yet, this couldn’t compensate for the awful script with utterly dislikeable characters and the plot drenched in the despair and pointlessness.
