This flamboyant guy is the smallest and the best singer of the Songbirds here in South Africa.
Today we will have a look at the Southern Red-Collared Sunbird (Cynnirys chalybeus).
Our Palm tree fruits (dates) are now ripe and we have some birds eating the fruits every day. This morning I spotted our little sunbird also joining the mousebirds in the tree and it was great to get this little flighty bird on camera again.
Come and have a look.
I saw the sunbird when he arrived to inspect the scene at the palm tree.
The yellow color on his wings signify that he is still a youngster.
This must be what he saw as the Mousebirds were partying in the palm tree.
I was amazed, as the sunbird drank the nectar from the spot where the Mousebirds removed the fruits.
Of course he saw me way down below the tree.
He gave me another look and then he was gone.
These little birds never sit for long, as the flit and fly all over like butterflies, but their song is indeed fabulous to hear.

The southern double-collared sunbird or lesser double-collared sunbird (Cinnyris chalybeus) is a small passerine bird which breeds in southern Africa. It is mainly resident, but partially migratory in the north-east of its range.
