Brand New Ethereum Project Aims to Tokenize In-Game Purchase

The capability to make decentralized software (DApps) is broadly thought of as among the most promising usage instances for blockchain engineering.

Palm, a brand new Ethereum-based project, aims to provide developers with the ability to tokenize in-game assets in traditional video games too.

With Palm, programmers can lead to favorite sports development instrument Unreal Engine to interface with intelligent contracts that run on the ethereum blockchain. In-game objects can then structured as ERC-721 tokens, which unlike ERC-20 components are non-fungible (CryptoKitties, for example, uses ERC-721 tokens).

Gamers who buy in-game items will have the freedom to remove the ERC-721 tokens out of the game -- similar to withdrawing coins out of a cryptocurrency exchange -- and sell them to other gamers or even move them into other video games that use a compatible in-game thing system.

"As a participant and blockchain enthusiast, I want to observe this type of integration shoot off. Imagine having the ability to bring your favorite weapon or digital hat out of 1 game and into a second," Clancy said. "The concept is in its infancy. However I am confident that some developers will find even more clever ways to incorporate using all the blockchain."
One sticking point to convincing developers to utilize this kind of strategy is that Palm is somewhat-antithetical into the prevailing business model regulating microtransactions, through which items are sold in a walled garden to maximize overall profits.

But while Clancy admits that Palm is an "academic exercise," he believes a system like this could gain traction if indie studios begin experimenting with cross-game assets.

"Both indie and big game studios stand to benefit from the security of the underlying Ethereum blockchain," he reasoned. "Instead of spending time creating or securing their thing sale platforms, developers can quickly deploy thing sale contracts and rely on the correctness of the inherent blockchain."
