The lyrics to the song “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” were written over time by Otis Redding, and added to by his collaborator, Steve Cropper.

The words muse upon the life that brought Redding to the shores of San Francisco after growing up in Georgia. The first lines were written while on that very shore and watching the activity on the water.

My Own Lyrics Challenge is going through the years to spotlight cool songs and this post is for 1968. “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” was a Number 1 hit upon release, and Billboard ranked the record as the No. 4 song of the year. It has gone on to be covered by many others over the years since then.

One of Redding’s most famous songs, “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” was recorded days before he and most of his band were killed in a plane crash in 1967. The song was released in 1968, and won awards, including two Grammy's. It is the first posthumous single to top the charts in the US.

These is no video for this song as it was released posthumously. This version released by the record label shows some footage and photos of other moments in the life of Otis Redding.

And here is the only other version of the song by Otis Redding – the first take.

(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay Lyrics - Otis Redding & Steve Cropper

[Verse 1]
Sittin' in the mornin' sun
I'll be sittin' when the evenin' come
Watching the ships roll in
And then I watch 'em roll away again, yeah

[Chorus]
I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

[Verse 2]
I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the 'Frisco bay
Cause I've had nothing to live for
And look like nothin's gonna come my way

[Chorus]
So I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

[Bridge]
Look like nothing's gonna change
Everything still remains the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same, yes

[Verse 3]
Sittin' here resting my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
It's two thousand miles I roamed
Just to make this dock my home

[Chorus]
Now, I'm just gonna sit at the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Oooo-wee, sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

[Outro]
Whistling
