Bombalai Hill, Dormant or Extinct Volcano?

I was browsing through the internet, checking if there is a Volcano in Malaysia, and to my surprise, there is one in Sabah. Who would ever guessed that the "Land Below The Wind" is the only place in Malaysia that has a volcano? Before you started to get panic that the volcano might erupt somewhere in the future, please be calmed.

The Bombalai Hill, located in Tawau, Sabah is the only known volcano in the whole of Malaysia, but scientist and researchers has defined it as "Extinct". There are three definitions for volcano, "Active, Dormant, and Extinct".

  1. Active volcanoes are those that has erupted in the past 10,000 years.
  2. Dormant volcanoes hasn't erupted in the past 10,000 years. And,
  3. Extinct are volcanoes that are deemed to be dead and will not erupt.

How true or accurate are these definitions? I guess no one can deny the possibility that even Extinct Volcano might become active. No one can ever really predict the power or underistimate the power of nature.

In my opinion, even if the Bombalai Hill is going to become Dormant and then Active, and maybe even erupted, it might happen further away in the future. Humans might even already extinct by then. So, unless you have a really long life to see or even experienced it in the future, there is nothing to be worried about at the moment.
