Customs intelligence officials have arrested a Bangladeshi airlines cleaner with 36 gold bars at Chittagong Shah Amanat Airport. He was detained while leaving the airplane at 11.00 am on Wednesday.
The name of the detainee is Mohammad Ilyas. The weight of the gold bar recovered from him was 4 kg 225 grams. The estimated value is two crore rupees.
Airport sources said Elias was returning from a UAE flight from Dubai to UAE at 11:00 pm. Customs intelligence officials followed him on the basis of intelligence from earlier. They searched the body of the cleaner. At that time, 36 gold bars were seized from his shoe.
Additional Director General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Department Abdul Hakim said at first light that a case was being filed against the arrested Ilyas at the airport police station. Action will also be taken in the Customs Act.
After being detained, Elias informed the customs officers, customs intelligence and intelligence officials about the smuggling, airport sources said. The gold bar was supposed to be smuggled into the airport via the Padma Oil Gate and residential area gates, he said. Earlier, he told intelligence officials that gold was smuggled along the way.
