Doodles are Fun #3 (158th Birthday of Sir MV)

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvarya, fondly known as Sir MV, was a civil engineer famous throughout the world. He devoted his life to engineering and he became so respected in his field that India celebrates Engineer's Day each year on his birthday.

Sir MV designed many notable projects but the most prominent of them all was the Krishna Raj Sagara Lake and Dam in 1924, which created the largest reservoir in India at that time. The dam also provided drinking water for several cities. No wonder, he is called the Master of Irrigation Design. Google featured this dam on the above Doodle. His flood protection system for the city of Hyderabad and his irrigation plans for Vishakhapanam (an Indian city) made him a celebrity.

Sir MV cared deeply about education and played a key role in founding the Government Engineering College at Banglore in 1917 which was later named as Visvesvaraya College of Engineering and Technology.

He was a simple man who received various awards including Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and even Bharat Ratna. He was born in a small village named Muddenahalli, situated in the state of Karnataka. The modest house where he was born  has become a place of worship for locals.
