Finding the Area of Polygons given its rectangular coordinate points

This post is purely an example of finding the area of polygons in a rectangular coordinates.

Given that you are knowledgeable enough to plot points in xy plane but what if the polygons are located in xy plane given there rectangular coordinate points, do you know how to find its area?.

So take time to read this post because this would really help you to find its area.

Here is the general formula of finding the area of polygons given its points.

In that situation it means you have to subtract the downwards to backwards. It would give you the formula.

Now let us take an example for you to really understand and know how to use the formula:

Given the points P1(3,3), P2(-2,-2) and P3(2,-2) find it area in square units.

First is you have to plot the corresponding points given . Connect the points to form the polygon, since only three points are given so it forms a triangle.

So by applying the formula we could have:

Note that in choosing the point you must first put for the X1 and Y1- choose any point as your reference point and then choose the second point in a counterclockwise direction from your reference point to have positive area results .

So here is the second example given the four points: P1(4,3) , P2(-2,4) , P3(-3,-3) and P4(4,-2).
Find its area in square units.
