hopefully winter shall soon pass but before it does i wanted to post these reflection photos i took back in january. i posted about gulls on ice earlier this year so some of this text may not be new to the most ardent and faithful reflection hunters but i like these photos so much i wanted to share them anyway
notice how the reflection of the gull is pink as it blends with the red ice. in case you are wondering what is making the ice so red...
the fishing trawlers have broken the ice to reach the dock where they deliver prawns. the fishermen say there are no fish in the sea but prawns are all the more plentiful with no fish around to feed on them.
the big white flash on the ice is from the upstairs window in the yellow building. that yellow color is a historic color unique to the tiny city of Stavern. throughout all Norway this particular shade of yellow is known as Stavern yellow.
here's a better look at the twice reflected light, first from the upstairs window and then again from the ice
there are only two remaining commercial vessels delivering to Stavern and sometimes both are at dock together
the blue boat is slightly narrower than the red one so there is more open water between it and the ice.
so while the boat is reflected onto both the water and the ice making them look blue, the sunlight is also reflected off the rippling water making patterns of light.
on the boat
but curious light reflections are not what attract the gulls that gather here
no, like any other gulls they are on the lookout for anything edible that might happen their way
and they stay because they know that eventually their patience will be rewarded
