In which OECD country can you earn the highest income per hour?

Watch In which OECD country can you earn the highest income per hour? video on DTube

Where can you earn the highest real disposable income per hour? This video takes a look at the real median income per hour. High GDP per capita can be a function of hours spent at work and can be distorted by high income disparity (wide gap between the majority of income earnings and the very rich).

Median is a more reliable measure of central tendency as it is not influenced by extreme values (outliers). Earnings per hour is also more useful than annual wages. Annual wages could be higher because of longer hours at work. Collecting sufficient data for all countries was difficult. Therefore only countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Economic Development (OECD) have been ranked in this video. The top 16 highest wage earning countries have been considered in this list.

The video works backwards from the 16th highest real median wage per hour and finishes up with the highest real median wage per hour. Here is the list of countries starting with the 16th highest real median income and counting down in reverse order.

  1. United Kingdom
  2. Republic of Ireland
  3. Sweden
  4. Finland
  5. Canada
  6. Austria
  7. Germany
  8. Netherlands
  9. United States of America
  10. Denmark
  11. France
  12. Australia
  13. Switzerland
  14. Belgium
  15. Norway
  16. Luxembourg

Income has been measured in Purchasing power Parity (PPP); this is to reduce distortion from the use of different exchange rates. The dollar values used in this video are the combination of the 2013, 2014, and 2015 dollar values; it was not possible to get every county in the same price year. The different price years should only cause minimal distortion as inflation has not been particularly high in any of the countries on the list.
