In Which We Greet the Hatbox Ghost

Haunted Mansion Holiday 20.jpg

The Hatbox Ghost is an iconic figure of Disney's Haunted Mansion which, for most of the ride's existence, wasn't even there.

The famous Hatbox Ghost was one of the original ghosts in the Haunted Mansion ride, and did appear when the attraction first opened. This skeletal figure wears a cloak and top hat, walks with a cane, and carries a hatbox with him. At times, his head will disappear and then reappear inside the hatbox.

When the Haunted Mansion debuted, this character was in the attic scene of the ride, and it quickly became clear that the effect they were trying to achieve wasn't actually working. So, sadly, they removed the character and stored him in the Disney vault for future reworking.

This ghost became more of a legend to those who enjoy Disney, and the idea of putting him back into the ride as technology improved was repeatedly tossed about. And, at long last, in 2015 -- just in time for the 50th anniversary of the Haunted Mansion ride -- the Hatbox Ghost (and his creepy skull) returned to add more spooks and chills.

They have not put this character into the same attraction at Disney World -- though cast members and guests alike would love to see that happen. For now, you can only see this ghoulish figure at Disneyland in California.

Happy Hauntings!
