Journalists often use the words „radical“ and „extreme“ as synonyms. And I, personally, often hear that my political positions are extreme. They are not, not at all.
So, what do the words "extreme" and "radical" mean?
- extreme: Let's take a commonplace and average political position as being "pro democracy". That, per se, is just a conventional opinion. But, if you say that every person that is not "pro democracy" is a fascist and should be persecuted, that makes you an extremist, because you take a certain belief of yours and push it to extremes.
- radical: the word "radical" stems from the Latin root (pun intended) "radix" translated as "root". "Radical" means "originating in the root or ground" and can signify "going to the origin, essential" or "reformist" in the political sense or "unconventional" (https://www.etymonline.com/search?q=radical). So, in that sense, "radical" can be a kind of opposite to "extreme" as it means to take an unconventional opinion without (!) pushing it to extremes.
In philosophy you can apply arguing from first principles (first_principles), if you start by looking at the exact meaning of a certain term, such as democracy or anarchy. As I've already written (here), I tend to like the idea of anarchy (as the "absence of rule/lordship"), but I don't push it to extremes. This makes me a radical (as described above).
Marc Andreessen, the Silicon Valley entrepreneur and investor, wrote about himself that he has "strong opinions loosely held". I think that goes in the same direction as being a radical.
Concerning most opinions there's the possibility that the reception of new facts may warrant a change of mind. So, I hold most (strong) opinions loosely, am open to new information and stay away from extremes.

Journalisten verwenden die Worte "radikal" und "extrem" oft als Synonyme. Und ich persönlich höre oft, dass meine politischen Positionen extrem sind. Das sind sie aber nicht, ganz im Gegenteil.
Was bedeuten also die Worte "extrem" und "radikal"?
- extrem: Nehmen wir eine alltägliche und durchschnittliche politische Position wie "pro Demokratie". Das ist an sich nur eine konventionelle Meinung. Wenn man aber sagt, dass jeder Mensch, der nicht "pro Demokratie" ist, ein Faschist ist und verfolgt werden sollte, dann ist man ein Extremist, weil man eine bestimmte Überzeugung ins Extreme treibt.
- radikal: Das Wort "radikal" kommt von der lateinischen Wurzel (Wortspiel beabsichtigt) "radix", was "Wurzel" bedeutet. "Radikal" bedeutet also "aus der Wurzel oder dem Boden kommend" und kann "zum Ursprung oder zum Wesentlichen gehen" oder "reformistisch" im politischen Sinne oder "unkonventionell" bedeuten (https://www.etymonline.com/search?q=radical). In diesem Sinne ist "radikal" fast das Gegenteil von "extrem", da es bedeutet, eine unkonventionelle Meinung zu vertreten, ohne (!) sie ins Extreme zu treiben.
In der Philosophie kann man von ersten Prinzipien ausgehen (first_principles), wenn man sich zunächst die genaue Bedeutung eines bestimmten Begriffs wie Demokratie oder Anarchie anschaut. Wie ich bereits geschrieben habe (hier), gefällt mir die Idee der Anarchie (als "Abwesenheit von Herrschaft"), aber ich treibe diese Ansicht nicht ins Extreme. Das macht mich zu einem Radikalen (im Sinne der Definition von oben).
Marc Andreessen, der Unternehmer und Investor aus dem Silicon Valley, schrieb über sich selbst, er habe "starke Meinungen, die er lose hält bzw. locker vertritt". Ich denke, das geht in die gleiche Richtung wie ein Radikaler zu sein.
Bei den meisten Meinungen besteht die Möglichkeit, dass neue Fakten eine Meinungsänderung rechtfertigen. Ich vertrete also die meisten meiner (starken) Meinungen lose/locker, bin offen für neue Informationen und halte mich von Extremen fern.

Así que, en ese sentido, "radical" puede ser una especie de opuesto a "extremo", ya que significa tomar una opinión no convencional sin (!) llevarla a los extremos.

En la mayoría de las opiniones existe la posibilidad de que la recepción de nuevos hechos justifique un cambio de opinión. Así pues, la mayoría de las opiniones (fuertes) las mantengo con ligereza, estoy abierto a nueva información y me mantengo alejado de los extremos.
