Has Communism ever been tried? - Evaluation of political ideologies

Dear Hiveans,

As I like controversial discussions, today, I dare to write about a topic that oftentimes flames passions: Has Communism ever really been done or even tried?

  • We can often read or hear that "real communism" has never been tried. I think that is plainly wrong. It has been tried in the Soviet Union, in Cuba, Venezuela and many other countries.
But: Communism has never been fully implemented.
  • What about Capitalism? In my opinion "real capitalism" has neither been implemented because the economy has always been distorted and goofed up by governments with interventionism, overregulation and monetary politics.

One big difference is that the attempts to build "real communism" have lead to tens of millions of deaths while the attempts to build "real capitalism" has lifted tens of millions of people out of abject poverty.

In the following table I depict my approach to assessing political directions (first column: from social democrat to anarchist) with a traffic-light system:

  • In the second column I try to describe the goal of each political ideology. I accept that everybody has his own concept of an ideal society. So I marked all goals as green.
  • In the third column I evaluate if these ideologies are dynamic or static. With "dynamic" I mean that only Communists and Anarchists seem to realize that the world is in constant motion and that their respective goal can (possibly) never be fully attained. The first three ideologies (liberals, conservatives, classical liberals) are static in the sense that they have a concept of a system (society, economy) in equilibrium. But neither society nor the economy are in equilibrium over the long term as they are always in flux. Social democrats still address each other as comrades and dream of a working class while conservatives restrict themselves to retarding the socialist movement without offering their own ideas of how to advance society.
  • In the fourth column I evaluate the means used by the proponents of the respective ideology. As communists/socialist (so far) have tried to reach their goals by (extreme) violence, they disqualify themselves. Social democrats / liberals, conservatives and classical party liberals apply political activity and a softer form of violence which is rule by democracy (majority). In my opinion the only valid and permissible means is the Non-Aggression Principle. Nobody has the right to use violence to force his political views onto another person. If your ideology needs to be enforced via violence, it is immoral and invalid.

So - what do you think of this evaluation? I am curious about your opinions - and after that post I'll avoid political discussions for a while 😇

Have a great weekend,

Liebe Hiver,

Also - was hältst Du von dieser Einschätzung?

Have a great weekend,

Queridos Hiveanos,

zuerich
