It is worth briefly to explain what a Big Band is for those who do not know. It is an orchestra format that emerged in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. In their origin they interpreted the swing and other rhythms associated with jazz. Although sometimes the instrumentation can vary a little, it can be said that basically they consist of a section of 5 saxophones, 3 or 4 trombones, 3 or 4 trumpets, bass, piano and percussion. While the use of the guitar was common in North-American bands, in Venezuela, percussion has been given greater importance, which usually includes drumset, congas, bongo drums, timbales, as well as güiro and maracas.

Renato Capriles, founder and conductor of the orchestra, was the most consistent fan of the other important Big Band of this genre, the Billo's Caracas Boys, of which I spoke to you a couple of months ago (click here to read). But this orchestra received a political veto in 1958 and could not work for a while. It was then that the Dominican musician creator of the Billo's decided to help Renato to form his own orchestra and that would be called "Los Melódicos". For that reason most of the arrangements of the orchestra when they started, came from the pen of Billo Frómeta.

All life was talked about the rivalry between the two orchestras, but this was a simple commercial trick, because the friendship of Renato and Billo was foolproof throughout their lives.

For his part, Renato took advantage of his moment and soon the orchestra "Los Melódicos" became one of the musical groups with the greatest projection, nationally and internationally. In his native land the orchestra acquired the nickname of "The one that imposes the rhythm in Venezuela".

This orchestra, also became a factory of stars, since it has left many singers who have shone with their own light in Show Business, such as Emilita Dago, Veronica Rey, Víctor Piñero, Manolo Monterrey, Roberto Antonio, Miguel Molly, Hildemaro, Diveana and Liz.

The repertoire includes rhythms like Cumbia, Dominican Merengue, Guarachas, Boleros, but it is not limited and in concerts it can surprise with any genre.

The orchestra has in its history a Guinness record, in terms of the number of albums recorded by a dance orchestra, with a number greater than 100.

Although Renato Capriles died in 2014, his daughter Iliana Capriles has been able to give a boost to the orchestra and has placed her once again on the highest rungs of the entertainment world, under the motto of "The Take Over Generation", has gone conquering new spaces and has rescued others that had been occupied by new format orchestras.

On July 15 they reach their 60 years of activity and it is impossible to mention all their hits during such a productive career.

Apart from Venezuela, Spain, the United States and Colombia, are the scenarios in which the orchestra that "continues imposing the rhythm" is the most demanded and where they prove that it is not just a weekend dance.

Valga explicar brevemente lo que es una Big Band para quienes no saben en qué consiste. Se trata de un formato de orquesta que surgió en los Estado Unidos a comienzos del siglo XX. En su origen interpretaban el swing y otros ritmos asociados al jazz. Aunque en ocasiones la instrumentación puede variar un poco, se puede decir que básicamente constan de una sección de 5 saxofones, 3 ó 4 trombones , 3 ó 4 trompetas, bajo, piano y percusión. Mientras que en las bandas norteamericanas era común el uso de la guitarra, en Venezuela se le ha dado mayor importancia a la percusión que suele incluir batería, congas, bongó, timbales, así como güiro y maracas.

Renato Capriles, fundador y director de la orquesta, era el más consecuente fan de la otra Big Band más importante de este género, la Billo’s Caracas Boys, de la cual les hablé hace un par de meses (clic aquí para leer). Pero esta orquesta recibió en 1958 un veto político y no pudo trabajar por un tiempo. Fue entonces que el músico dominicano creador de la Billo’s decidió ayudar a Renato a conformar su propia orquesta y que llevaría por nombre “Los Melódicos”. Por esa razón la mayoría de los arreglos de la orquesta cuando empezaron, venía de la pluma de Billo Frómeta.

Durante toda la vida se habló de la rivalidad de ambas orquestas, pero este fue un simple truco comercial, pues la amistad de Renato y Billo fue a toda prueba durante toda sus vidas.

Por su parte Renato supo aprovechar su momento y pronto la orquesta “Los Melódicos” se convirtió en una de las agrupaciones musicales con mayor proyección, a nivel nacional e internacional. En su tierra natal la orquesta adquirió el apelativo de “La que impone el ritmo en Venezuela”.

Esta orquesta, además se convirtió en una fábrica de estrellas, ya que de ella han salido cantidad de cantantes que han brillado con luz propia en el Show Business, tales como Emilita Dago, Verónica Rey, Víctor Piñero, Manolo Monterrey, Roberto Antonio, Miguel Molly, Hildemaro, Diveana y Liz.

La orquesta incluye en su repertorio ritmos como la cumbia, merengue dominicano, guarachas, boleros, pero no se limita y en los conciertos puede sorprender con cualquier género.

La orquesta tiene en su historia un récord Guinness, en cuanto a la cantidad de discos grabados para una orquesta bailable, con un número mayos a los 100 discos.

Aunque Renato Capriles falleció en 2014, su hija Iliana Capriles ha sabido darle un reimpulso a la orquesta y la ha ido colocando una vez más en los peldaños más altos del mundo del espectáculo, bajo el lema de “La Generación de Relevo”, ha ido conquistando nuevos espacios y ha rescatado otros que habían sido ocupados por orquestas de nuevo formato.

El 15 de julio llegan a sus 60 años de actividad y es imposible mencionar todos sus éxitos a lo largo de una carrera tan productiva.

Aparte de Venezuela, España , Estados Unidos y Colombia son los escenarios donde más solicitan a la orquesta que “sigue imponiendo el ritmo” y donde demuestran que no solo se baila los fines de semana.

Es lohnt sich kurz zu erklären, was eine Big Band ist, für diejenigen die es nicht wissen. Es ist ein Orchesterformat, das zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts in den Vereinigten Staaten entstand. In ihrer Herkunft haben sie den Swing und andere Rhythmen des Jazz interpretiert. Obwohl manchmal die Instrumentierung ein wenig variieren kann, kann man sagen, dass sie im Grunde aus einem Abschnitt von 5 Saxophonen, 3 oder 4 Posaunen, 3 oder 4 Trompeten, Bass, Piano und Percussion bestehen. Während der Gebrauch der Gitarre in nordamerikanischen Bands üblich war, wurde in Venezuela Perkussion eine größere Bedeutung beigemessen, die normalerweise Schlagzeug, Congas, Bongo-Trommeln, Timbales sowie Güiro und Maracas umfasst.

Dieses Orchester wurde auch zu einer Starsfabrik, da es viele Sänger von hier rauskammen, die mit ihrem eigenen Licht in Show Business glänzten, wie Emilita Dago, Veronica Rey, Víctor Piñero, Manolo Monterrey, Roberto Antonio, Miguel Molly , Hildemaro, Diveana und Liz.

Das Orchester enthält in seinem Repertoire Rhythmen wie Cumbia, Dominikanische Merengue, Guarachas, Boleros, aber es ist nicht begrenzt und in Konzerten kann es mit jedem Genre überraschen.
