Keep Goal Setting Simple, But Effective.

Not having goals is often compared to a ship being at sea with no rudder...there is no way of steering it to a specific destination.

Having goals is good, but having a goal without having a plan of how to achieve it, is also pretty useless. They say that a goal that is not written down, is just a dream. But even if your goal is written down, you need a specific plan to be able to achieve it.

It is often said that we need to be very specific in describing our goals by setting S.M.A.R.T. goals.

  • S - Specific: It has to be very spicific and describe exactly what you want to achieve (or have).
  • M - Measurable: You need to be able to determine when you have achieved your goal (or how far away you are from achieving the desired end-result).
  • A - Achievable: Your goal should be realistic and achievable.
  • R - Relevant: Your goal should be relevant to your personal values and/or other goals you have.
  • T - Have a deadline for when the goal should be achieved.

But, often we get overwhelmed by setting huge goals. We either don't know where to start or we lose motivation because it feels as if we are never going to achieve our goal.

But there is another way of goal-setting which has become very popular. It is called OKR's (Objectives and Key Results) and helps you to keep the process simple.

It allows you to set quarterly goals (without being too specific in the description) such as "Learn more about the Hive Blockchain and grow my HIVE portfolio". This will be your objective.

Then you decide on up to 4 key results you want to achieve, using the S.M.A.R.T. principle, which will cause you to achieve your objective.

These can be something like -

  • Key Result 1: Find at least 5 tutorial articles to read or videos to watch on the HIVE blockchain before the end of September.
  • Key Result 2: Publish at least 2 original posts of my own every week on HIVE.
  • Key Result 3: Leave comments on at least 5 posts per day of other community members on HIVE.
  • Key Result 4: Grow my HIVE balance to 1000 HIVE.

Try to choose your quarterly objectives in such a way that it leads to achieving a long term goal.

There is a great online tool (free for up to 3 users) that can help you with setting your goals by using OKR's. It is called Weekdone. It follows the PPP method for plans, progress and problems.

It assists you in your weekly planning, showing your progress and recording any problems that you encounter along the way.

They have a great blog post explaining the whole process.

I have personally used this tool for quite some time and also during my experiment with the Start Earning Today program. I continue using it now to plan the journey ahead.

I hope this post will be helpful in your goal-setting process.
